Installed new CarboMet pads on front of 1999 Quadcab 2WD 2500 with standard rear wheel-only anti-lock brake system. Started engine and stepped on brake pedal. Brake warning light & ABS warning lights came on as pedal went to floor. Stepped on pedal several more times until it came up to normal position and brakes work great. Turned off the ignition, and then re-started the engine in normal fashion, but the brake and ABS warning lights continue to stay on even though the brakes seem to be functioning o. k. I even tried disconnecting both batteries to see if the system needed to reset, but the warning lights still remain on after reconnecting the batteries.

Anybody run into this before? Suggestions?

You may have to start - drive - shut down 3-4 times before the initial trouble code is cleared. This has been my experience with my '99. Since you know what caused the MIL to light and the problem is now fixed, I'd just drive it and wait for it to go out.

BTW, welcome to the TDR!!

Brake and ABS Lights

Unplug the brake assembly, let it sit for a couple of minutes and plug back in. This should re-cycle the brake computer. It may not be the brakes, though. There has been some problems with the speed sensor picking up trash in the '99. Pull the sensor and clean and re-install if the other fix fails.

Still Lit!

So far nothing has worked.

Problem started last week and I have driven to and from work (100 mi/each way) all week, idiot lites still on.

Unplugged the RWAL CAB module for 5 minutes, then reconnected, idiot lites still on.

Pulled, cleaned, re-installed the speed sensor in the rear differential housing, idiot lites still on.

One thing I had not noticed before since I don't watch the speedometer (usually watch the tach) - the speedometer is not working until I reach 25mph. The needle then jumps to 25mph & reads correctly from there on to Warp 10 cruising speed.

Maybe the speed sensor is having seizures?? and sending goofy signals to the RWAL CAB??

Also, I will be bleeding system & replacing fluid when I install larger-bore rear cylinders from Sam Peterson.

End of story

Finally - the problem is resolved!!

For any who may be following this adventure, the problems were caused by a failed speed sensor that is mounted in the top of the differential housing. Replaced it today and voila', everything works like it's supposed to. Musta been just simple coincidence that it failed right after I replaced the front brake pads. Sure had me buffalo'd for a bit. Checked the new & old sensors with an ohm meter and found the old one shows open. Internal coil musta gave it up. Speed sensor cost a whole $33 from Keating Dodge in Winnie, TX.
