need your guys help. my 2001 dodge 2500 after almost 10 yrs of faithfull service died after stalling it at a gas station[5 speed]. fass fuel pump still showing 15 psi on the gauge. had it towed to greg readon dodge and there getting a 1688 code. vp44. could this be the fca or pressure relief valve and be reading this code?trk has 103,000 miles. hard to think just stalling it could take out the vp44 so fast. thought maybee a saftey fuse or something simulating a accident. trucks broke and were towing it hame from the dealer this afternoon. if it is the vp44 wheres the best place to get one?sorry no profile yet, just joined but have followed this site for years. brad:is there some way to check it?[spray starting fluid or ??]

Hi Sleddog,

Welcome aboard.

Yes it's the VP44. P1688 means an internal fuel injection pump failure and the only remedy is replacement.

A couple of the popular sources for replacements are:

Blue Chip Diesel

Midwest Fuel Injection

I'm sure others will chime in with their favorites.

Good luck,

John L.

I just learned today that TDR member Mike Wilson "MWilson" is parts manager at a big Freightliner dealer in Maine that sells and services Cummins ISB parts. If you have a little time to shop you might post or pm to Mike and ask him what his price for a Cummins reman would be. Never hurts or costs anything to ask. He might be able to do a TDR member a big favor.

sleddog, with that code vp44 bit the dust.

On 24 valve engines with vp44 no FCA or relief valve(Common rails have fca and relief valve 2003 and up). You do have an overflow valve.
