I was tabbing the KDP and setting the timing on my truck when we broke off the timing pin. The problem is that the piece that broke off is no where to be found. We checked in the hole in the cam gear, we drained the oil and blew air down around in the pan, we just can't find that little piece anywhere. Do I need to pull the oil pan? What should I do????

At some time or another mine got broke off too, when it affects something I'll let you know. There is no way I would ever pull the pan for something non-metallic.

My timing pin broke a long time ago and I have not had any problems with it. I thought about flushing the engine with diesel fuel at an oil change but just never got around to it. I guess the thing is plastic. I have the HB marked for TDC and the heck with the pin.

Where'd the pin go?

The end of the pin is probably still stuck in the cam gear. I've seen this quite often but won't admit to doing it myself. It is made of plastic or nylon type material and I dont see it hurting anything.

I would leave it and not worry unless you end up removing the fuel pump, and at that time it will be easier to replace the pin and get it at true TDC. In the mean time use your valves positions for reference for valve adjust.

I see you were adjusting the timing on the truck when it broke. Do you have the timing set where you want it? If so leave the pin alone. My . 02 A Johnson

Thanks for the help guys. Everything other than the timing pin mishap went well. The KDP is now tabbed, good thing too with 198000 on the truck the pin was out at least 1/4"+  . But now I can rest assure on that little matter :) . The only concern I now have is with that little piece of plastic floating around the engine:confused: . Thanks for easing my mind on that one anywhay. The timing went well (even with the pin breaking off). The timing is now between 15 and about 15-2/3"degrees. I couldn't get an exact measurement due to the broke pin but I'm 99. 9% sure it is within that range and I had to drive to work today. I will probably check it again next weekend using the valve/dial indicator method to find top dead center.

Thanks again for the help,

Brian

Brian when Jim Killen and I were doing my timing is whwn I noticed the pin broke off and we reverted to finding actual TDC using the valves as a guide and marking the balancer using a thick piece of wire as a pointer atttached to a pan bolt, **** on that pain the ass pin.

broke timing pin

I also broke mine off but used the indicators on the gears for TDC as my cover was off for the KDP to be tabbed. It must be there somewhere I don't know where.
