Hi there im in neex of some help. Just pulled into Denver tonight with my 12k lb trailer. Im USAF moving across the country and i have either gearbox or clutch issues. Transmission/clutch area started making a grinding slapping noise. (Bellhousing area) about 20 miles from town. Shifted into 4th to limp to town bc i suspected 5th gear nut. However it makes noise in all gears now when under load. I installed a 13" con-o about 10kyou ago and had no problems. I neex either a shop or a good referal. Any help appreciated. My cell is 805-610-9254a and my name is Jamie

Thanks in advance

JAMIE

Unfortunately you are in the weekend. All the good shops that I know of are closed.

Gods help me... Maybe ATS, back on the west side of town (Ward Road and I-70) could help. They might be open Saturdays, and IIRC Manual Transmissions are one of the few things they didn't screw up on.

Other than that, Central Motive Power on Monday - but they are not a Trans shop. This would be if you had to do a replacement, in which case you will be in town for a few.

I'll put out a feeler with a coworker to see where he had his transmission done to see if they are open on Saturdays. Check back around 0800.

EDIT - double check to make sure that your 2low mod is not trying to kick in the front axle, and that the transfer case is indeed in 4hi. This does sound a little like what happened to same coworker (different shop - tech that test drove it after heater core replacement bumped 4wd lever).

OK climbed under the pickup this morning and almost positive that it is the clutch. Noise corresponds with wheel speed and its coming from the bellhousing. Now where to take it? Preferably somewhere that deals with SBC.

Thanks,
Jamie

Didnt have any luck finding a shop open this weekend and didnt really want to spend the day under the pickup in the parking lot w/o a transmission jack so hoping ATS is open and available tomorrow. We headed up to Cheyenne to visit a friend. Pickup and trailer is still in Aurora. Hoping ATS can drop the transmission quick and see whats going on in there. My gut tells me maybe one of the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel backed out or sheard? Seems to me I remeber loctite on those bolts? We will see.

Hoping ATS will have SBC parts on hand and could also be the middle man with SBC eventhough i am probably out of warranty.

Any contacts at ATS? I cruised by the shop and it was quiet. Hopefully they aren't closed for the holiday.

Thanks for all the help.

No contacts from me. Again - hated to recommend them - lack of options. Since it may be a clutch issue, they are still your better bet, not much they can screw up other than your wallet.

Jamie, If you are going to talk to ATS? 4-to-go is about a mile or so South East of ATS. At least stop by and talk to them. Play one against the other.
I would call Peter at SBC and get a recommendation, before committing. I understand that you may be schedule pressed.
Hope you get the best service and back on the road, for the long haul!

Does it make noise in neutral, clutch in or out?

Nick

Spoke with SBC today and sounds like it is the gear ox and not the clutch so I took it to these guys.

http://fifthgearrepair.com/nv4500repair.html

Figured they have plenty experience with them and they have NV4500's sitting on the shelf with their gear nut in them.
Oddly they had never heard of TDR and I reccommended that they look into it because I had never heard of them either.

We'll see what happens but should be done by this afternoon or in the morning.
