I have an '04. 5 Dually 4X4 with the 48RE and 4. 10's. I bought it that way to pull a fifth wheel, and after purchasing the truck, my job situation changed, so no trailer. Now the truck is mostly used as a commuter and light work. Empty in town, I get 12-13 MPG. On the highway at a steady 70mph, I can get 15-16 MPG. I can't complain, as I got rid of a '92 Bronco with a 302 that would get 10-11 no matter how or where I drove... ... . Robert

Thanks alot for the input guys. I never really wanted the 4. 10's, it's just that this truck happened to be on the lot. The dealer did locate a 2005 white sport 3500 4x4 quad 48re 3. 73 for me. Let the negotiations begin!

Which is about were it would be wih 4. 10s and a NV5600 and a little more then with the auto. I surprised that anyone would want a DUALLY AUTO with 3. 73s. If ONLY a few hundered rpm differance(which makes a BIG differance in a diesel)and if pulling anything more then pop up camper 4. 10s is it.

I like your style DP ;)

Mac

In my opinion

I have followed this discussion on many threads. I really boils down to personal preference. If your not going to tow then you don't ever need the 4. 10. If you are going to tow light, say <6000 lbs, then you might want the 4. 10 every once in a while but you won't need it. If you are going to tow heavy say >10,000 lbs frequently, and you live where you can run your truck at 65-75 then the 3. 73 will do fine. But if you are towing heavy and live where you will be towing <65 MPH and have the 3. 73 with the auto on a stock truck, the transmission will hunt. More power will help but I wouldn't expect to add a box to your truck unless you intend to upgrade your transmission at the same time. As for me I will stick with my 2 NV 5600's, but I wish I had the 4. 10 on the 03 as here in the I-95 corridor its not safe to tow much over 65 in most areas. But then again I bought my truck to tow my travel trailer exclusively. IMHO Ken Irwin

Kirwin,

Nice explanation, but I disagree about the hunting part, atleast on the new & improved 48RE. It will downshift as needed but it does not "hunt", atleast mine doesn't.

I agree with you tschawb

Opinions are like other bodily orifices! :) I have not drive a new truck since Dodge installed the Tow/Haul switch vise the old overdrive lockout switch. They continue to improve the electronics controlling everything in my life. Soon I won't be able to wipe without some electronic gadget dispensing the TP. Sometimes the 97 just shines.

I'm thinking about getting a new tailgate emblem:

"MECHANICAL FUEL INJECTION" :p :p

Now where's that spell check button so I can makes sure I spelled that right! :(
