While checking all of the pullies and idlers on my 2005 with the serp belt removed, I found that I can move the pulley on the power steering pump in and out (end play) over 1/8".

I have NEVER experienced this on a PS pump before, so it does NOT seem normal to me, although there are no other signs of a problem, no side play, no noise, etc.

Is this end play in the PS pump shaft NORMAL or is it a sign that the bearings going out??

TIA!!!

Mine developed a leak around the shaft. I took off the belt and found about the same amount of end play you did. At the time I thought it was leaking because of the end play but I can't really say if the end play and the leak were related or not. Maybe not.

I did replace the pump with the latest style which caused a lot of new problems with belt jumping etc. Don't get me started on that saga. #@$%!

Actually, if you don't mind, please DO get started on that saga, as I AM thinking of upgrading to the NEW PS pump along with the NEW steering box which IS going in under warranty.

Many thanks for your input!!

So there is nothing inherently wrong with the new pump and resorvoir set-up, and it IS an upgrade, but it is important to have the pulley aligned carefully on the PS pump shaft.

OK Thanks... now I remember that thread.
