I remember scanning a post a few weeks ago about a noisy 5 speed. Since it didn't pertain to me at the time I didn't pay a lot of attention, now I can't find it. HELP. I've worked thorough several Search efforts without finding the subject Post.
As I recall, the poster had noise in 4th and prehaps 5th. , several replies offered advise on identifying the problem and parts to replace with advise on not trying to cheap out and reuse parts that look fine but could cause problems down the road.
The reason I'm interested is that on my recent trip to Elk country we were going West on Hwy 50 in Colorado pulling Monarch Pass at about 63mph in 5th when it started making a horrendous gear/bearing failure noise. Thinking 5th gear nut failure, I went down to 4th, and got the same noise.
So, now at anything over 25lbs of boost in 4th or 5th, it sounds like the old 5 speed is about to spit out every gear and bearing it's got. My guess is I've got a bad bearing on the counter-shaft or mainshaft.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks, RJR
