My friend has an 02' with approximately 90000 on it. He bought it used so I dont know the history on it. He says that in the mornings when he starts it up there is always a lot of smoke. When he leaves in the morning it barely goes. After it warms up he can floor it and it just wont go. It stays at same speed. Is it fuel filter or lift pump? That would be my guess. I told him to stop today and put a new filter in to start with. If it is the lift pump will a FASS System work? He is planning some performance mods in future.

He is setting these codes: 0500; 0460;1693;0216. I will try a search for these codes here.

sounds like he needs an injection pump.

I would check the fuel pressure asap. get a gauge, that will save the injection pump more than anything. Yes a fass would be good, but I think the damage is done here.

If he needs a new injection pump, I would defianately make sure the new one is monitored with a guage and good lift pump or fass.

Get it to the dealer quick because they might give him a hard time about the warranty work begin that near to the end of the warranty period.

A p0216 means a dead/dying VP44. I would bet that the LP is shot also. Just so you know, I doubt that the dealer will change both the LP and VP44 at the same time, they usually will only change one at a time so get it done quick.

If they change the VP44, I would strongly suggest going with a better fuel setup than the stock LP. I personally run a FASS and would recomend it. If he wants to save a few dollars, the FASS-2 is also great. Both install in around three hours and will be some of the best money spent.

He has an appointment Tuesday. They say they have parts in stock. Yes they told him it is under warranty. Thank you all for your help. TDR is Great!

At 40,000, my brother got a new FP and IP from the dealer under warranty. Couple weeks ago, at 70,000 miles, the dealer changed both the LP and IP again, telling him the LP caused the IP to fail. Dealer tried to deny his warranty because he was using Napa fuel filter. Napa filters are Wix, arent they? Good filters? Any opinions?( I talked him into using Fleetguards) He added a FP gauge yesterday, tells me he sees 13 PSI no load, 3 PSI full load. What are the factory specs on fuel pressure starting, at idle, and full load?

I would say that you really don't want it to drop much below 7 or 8 psi at full throttle. time for a new lift pump before it takes out another injection pump.

My brother took it to the dealer, showed them that his new FP gauge showed low psi, around 0 to 3 full load. The mechanic flow tested his system, said it passed, said fuel pressure were no longer a valid test, as per a TSB. Not sure what number TSB it was. Any thoughts?

If it was my truck, I would replace the pump on my own dollar if the dealer wouldn't pay. $150 out of his pocket but at least he will have peace of mind when he is out of warranty that this pump has been treated properly.
