I went to my dealer today to get my tires rotated as apart of my first year free service. Along with my request for the rotation of my tires. Well I didn't expect them to change my Amsoil Synthetic as I didn't ask for anything other my tires to be rotated. I asked the mechanic what kind of oil he was putting in and he said "I don't know, the same oil we use in everything else". Well I have always been under the impression that once you change to synthetic you can't go back. I have already ordered oil and filters but until that gets here is my truck in danger?!

Go back and demand that they reimburce you for the Amsoil. Bring copys of your oil purchase.
I hope you didn't pay for their oil!

I never heard that you couldn't go back to regular oil, but Here is my story.
I had AmsOil in my truck for 10K miles and 2 days after I put regular diesel oil in the engine light went on. 2 weeks after I changed back to regular oil The Oil Pressure gauge Went to 0-PSI and the Check Gauges light came on. The gauge comes on and goes off without any input from throdel or bumps.

And what caused this problem? A bad sending unit? or does your engine really have 0psi pressure?

If he said it's the same oil we use in everything else, I would change the oil imediately as theres a good chance that it is rated for gasoline engines. At least check there drum and find the oil rateing, it should read CH-4/SJ if it does not read this then do not run the engine as severe damage could result. Report this to the shop manager, if they fire that idiot who changed your oil you will be doing someone else a big favor.

You need the CG or CH-4 rateing for the diesel engine (compression) and the SJ rateing which is for gas engines (spark) but you need this rateing to address your cam and lifters. Ron

I second ronsram1999 ststements. Change it immediately because you are unsure if it is a "diesel" oil or not.

Also, you can switch back an forth between syn and conventional oil. There are no ill effects, other than you could, in rare cases, develop some leaky seals due to their additive package incompatabilities. I don't think this is a big issue with today's oil though.

Don't you hate all those a**holes at the dealer who are brain dead when it comes to a diesel engine?

Ditto on Cooker!!!!

Also, that Dealer OWES YOU MONEY!

Check with your Amsoil dealer and get the dipstick decal that says,
"DO NOT CHANGE OR ADD OIL WITHOUT OWNERS CONSENT. "

Lots of luck getting reimbursed for the oil.

Synthetic oil myth #5,378
Once you switch to synthetic oil, you cannot switch back.

AMSOIL & Conventional oils are %100 compatible.
Since I am not %100 sure, I will only go as far as to say "most" synthetics are like this.

If you buy a semi-synthetic or para-synthetic oil. That is exactly what you are getting. 50/50 of each.

I would also be upset about what happened. Whole lotta money down the drain. .

The above comments are correct, but lets talk it through. You go back to the dealer and voice the above concerns, they come pack and they respond "the oil we used IS diesel rated", "the reason we use Amsoil is that it IS a better oil", "no concerns" . . which will all be good counter points.

The problem is that EVERYWHERE on this board there are references to being SURE that the engine is well broke in BEFORE switching to synthetic. And depending on your driving / use of the truck . . anywhere from 12-15k miles.

You'd want to get the oil out of the truck so it doesn't impead the break-in cycle.

My . 02 cents
Michael
