Just take the old one off with a filter wrench, you may have to unplug the water sensor on the bottom of the filter. If you cannot get a filter wrench on it I have taken a hammer and a chisel to loosen it up where I could get it off by hand. When you get it off you can put the water sensor on the new filter. Put clean diesel fuel on both seals,(make sure you get the old small seal off of the filter base).
Put the new one on but don't tighten it down leave enough of a gap to let air out. Pump the primer pump located stright under the filter on the block (I use a 18 inch 3/8 drive extention so I do not have to shove my arm down in there). Pump the primer until fuel starts comming out, tighten the filter hook up the sensor wire up, then start the engine should run.
Thats how I change my filter on my 95 I think its the same? If not someone tell me?

You have the filter like mine.
You'll need to:
1 Open the drain.
2 You'll need a 9/16" wrench to take off the nut on the top of the filter. Unhook your drain line, and...
3 the "water in fuel" electrical line.
If you have ABS like I do, you'll have to work it up to the front of the frame, then raise it out by the battery area. (hard to explain)
Remove all rubber gaskets, and replace with new ones. Reverse above to install it, but try to put some clean fuel in first.
You'll need to pump your fuel lift pump (rubber button next to lift pump) to get it to start.
Sorry I cant explain it better, I'm at work.

Thanks for all the help. I have a mechanic friend whom is coming over to help, at least for the first time. this website is great, especially when there are great people out there willing to help.

my 97 doesn't have a spin on fuel filter but a cartage type filter and I belive your 98 has the same thing. BigYellowIron's directions are for a spin on filter. The patriot is the right directions for your filter.

Another words DO NOT take a hammer and chisel to it. Be nice to it or you will have to buy a new filter cannister.

Someone at Dodge had a better idea in 97/98 and changed the fuel filter from a fairly cheap spin-on filter that was easy to get to and replaced it with an expensive canister. And then put in a place that is hard to reach and very difficult to remove. On the bright side, it is almost impossible to fill with fuel and replace.

I have the 98' 12valve 4x4. I need to replace my fuel filter today, and Im not mechanically inclined. But I do know how to make the right decision on what truck to drive. #ad
Can anyone give help on how to replace this filter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Im sure it is simple, but I can mess up anything.

Dave, I agree with you on the price. And yes, it is hard to get to, you'll end up scratching some paint on your engine, or filter housing no matter what you try (I have ABS) but I like the extra filtration too.

Alright, called local Dodge dealer and the filter is $43, wow. Called Napa and got it for $23. Im going to tackle it on Saturday, after snow melts and it warms up. Directions seem to be very straight forward. Looks like the hard part is getting my arm bent around all the other organs that are in the way. Thanks for the help.

even with all the screams that were on the website a couple months ago, i like my Primeloc! #ad

dieselnv, it's below the fuel filter, and a little to the rear of it.
If youre looking down by the starter, it's the only think with a rubber accordian like button on it.
My Dad's truck (1990) has a lever on it.
