exhaust elbow question??

How the heck do the front wheel bearings come out? I removed the 4 bolts on the back side, but it won't budge. I am trying to replace the front axle u joints, and hoping that is the correct way to go about it. I really don't want to mess with the ball joints. Help! Thanks.

Is it a 2wd or 4wd? If 4wd look for the thread I started 2 weeks ago on this subject. If 4wd, the bearings don't come out - we had to replace the entire hub when the bearings went bad.

Chris, When I took mine apart I bacred the bolts out a little and used a brass drift & hammer and used the bolts to drive the assembly out. If its the first time for them it will take some time to get it apart. When you put it back together put some anti seize on them. Hope this helps. Jeff

Yep, anti sieze for dams sure, my ***. I got em off, lots of BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS!!!!!!!! (leterally) That's what it takes to get em off. About 500+ blows with my 6 lb sledge, 200+ with the 15 per side (not kidding). thost mothers were rusted on solid, no prayer of saving the bearings. The wheel bearings are beat to *****, I distroyed one stud before I decided to take them all out before continuing. I got some new bearings at napa, those things are expendy. ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sitting here shaking slightly, exhausted, and now I have to put it all back together. #@$%! *** **** **. I hate this.

That is why I had a shop do it, after reading all the responses to basicly the same question. I paid $70 for labor to have the hub changed out and a front end alignment at Garland Safety Lane. The only expensive part is the $200 I spent buying a new hub with bearings. I thought all along that the hub had gears like the chevy straight axle trucks I have driven for years. The Chevy's used to have a Warren manual hub (on my '70 and '71), but my '83 and '84 has an auto locking hub. I have never had to replace a Chevy hub, only the bearings. But I could not find parts for a Dodge hub, only can get a new hub. No one even rebuilds them. Here I thought Dodge was better than Chevy. I really am p. o. 'd to find that my front differential is always spinning even in 2wd, when in motion.

There is nothing more I hate than getting into a seemingly straight forward job ... only to find it turns into a nightmare. I've got plenty of scars on my hands to prove it. I'm with you CAnderson. A while back, I sized up the HX35 to HX40 swap, drove to Canada & had Piers boys @ BD do it. :)
