Help! Hi-jacked by netscape

I recently replaced my wood-burning computer (read- SLOW) with a new model. It came with Microsoft Internet Explorer as the browswer. I had always been comfortable with Netscape so I went and downloaded version 7. 2. I was happy at first but then Netscape stole my homepage! I tried everything I knew but could not restore my persoally selected home page. I finally deleted all bookmarks with any reference to Netscape and the problem was fixed..... for a while. Tonite when I booted the computer lo-and-behold my homepage is Netscape.



Anyone have any idea how to end this for good? I will switch browsers again but don't want to go back to microsoft either.

No but seriously could it be an underlying program that is holding the home page. I have seen a boat load of scripts out there that can run in the background that work far to easily with netscape (Which is great for the ad companies) Can you run a program like

I've had great luck with Avant Browser. It's even got a built in pop-up stopper.



I've got Mozilla too, and it's a good browser. I just find it's a little slow to load Java stuff.

Besides that, Netscape is now owned by AOL, which is just as bad as MS. Did Netscape every ask if you wanted AOLIM installed everywhere on your computer?

For the network admins: How do you block AIM without blocking AOL mail?

Still using netscape 6. Use MS outlook express for mail. Tried to upgrade to 7. 2, very doable but there is no option not to install AOL IM. Netscape 6 is my last netscape product and I will gladly pay for the next non netscape/MS browser as long as I can kill pop ups and not install stuff I do not want.

Mozilla 1. 3 is available is available for Windoze and Linux. If you need an e-mail client this will replace Outlook. If all you need is a browser and nothing else, Firebird 0. 6 is stable and fast. It is available on Windoze, Linux and I believe Solaris X86.



Both browsers are available at no cost and with pop-up blockers at mozilla.org.



If you use Linux, you might also try Galeon or Nautilus. They are based on mozilla's Gecko engine, as is Firebird.



I don't use Internet Exploder or Netscape because 1) they are owned by MS and AOL respectively and I try to support open-source software; 2) They gladly permit pop-ups and other annoyances; and 3) I hate Microsoft after having to support their server software and all the irritants therein.

The guy who pointed me toward adware also mentioned mozilla. I already have netscape and my only major gripe was the hijacking issue. If the adware stops the hijacking, I'm sticking with netscape. If the antics continue, I'm going to mozilla. I am new to concept of open source software, and would like to know more.

I am still using netscape 4. 8 due to my ISP not supporting anything higher

I also use IE, whatever version came with windows XP pro, I end up using both because everthing does not work in both, you end up switching back and forth



I also use netscape for my email, none of the viruses so far have effected the netscape mailer since it has no provision for remote controll or remote access



and I need a new pop up killer since "pop-up killer" itself no longer exists

Mozilla & Firebird both have pop-up blockers. There are many other pop-up blockers, many of which are free. I have used CookieCop from www.pcmag.com for several years. I actually have to shut down CookieCop and reconfigure my browsers if I want to allow a pop-up.



CookieCop used to be free, but I think PC Mag is now charging a couple of bucks. CookieCop is a 1,210K download. Well worth the time.



Mozilla has an e-mail client. Firebird is a "clean" browser, that is now e-mail or chat clients.

Other programs that work in conjunction with AdAware are Spybot - Search & Destroy and PestPatrol. Both are free and do a good job. Along with my anti virus software, I have never been infected with adware, spyware or other malware.
