2500 vs. 3500 towing a 5'er?

reese 15k problems

I had put a post on a while back in another forum about which transmission cooler to use and i am still uncertain?? I ordered a cooler by mail and it is a 10 row cooler and the cooling tubes are 1/2" according to the box, but the openings look like they are 3/8". Its copper! When i started to install i realized that the lines on the truck were not the normal 3/8" that i am used of seeing, and i am not sure if i can send the new cooler back now. Will it cause a pressure problem using this large cooler with the smaller openings? I am switching to synthetic fluid also, and when i can afford it i am going to purchase deeper transmission pan. The transmission was overhauled before i got truck about 10-20,000 miles ago. I installed a perma cool remote transmission filter and temp gauge about a month ago and can now monitor the transmission temps and they are running 220-240 degrees today empty (especilly high in traffic)with the ambient being 95 or so. I towed 6000 lb alumalite the otherday and at times temp reached 260. I was doubting whether the gauge was accurate so while towing and seeing 250 degrees i pulled over and touched the remote filter that is right before the cooler and it was screaming hot to the touch and after idling 5 min. or so was a lot cooler. Could the old cooler be partly plugged up?? Maybe they didn't flush it or replace it after the old transmission was toasted?? Someone suggested using an engine oil cooler since the openings are larger?? Can you have to large of a cooler?? I would appreciate any info since i really need to get this temp down and am setting on a $60. 00 cooler i'm not sure i can send back since it was installed for a short time but no fluid applied to it. I had the transmission flushed and serviced about 4,000 miles ago, and it stays full of fluid. Sorry for the long post but i need to find out what my problem is befor i toast transmission!! Thanks, Tim.

Not real sure of the 95 BUT: are you putting the cooler in parallel with the factory, if not then do and the 3/8 will not matter. I have an aux cooler and see temps of 280 regularly, LE torque fluid and have not had any problems in 30k miles with transmission mods and fore mentioned temps. What brand transmission temp gauge???Touching cooler just means it is hot ( above 140* ) but not how hot. If you can find someone with an IR thermomiter you can check the gauge calibration very easily.

Why the transmission fluid filter??? could this be restricting the fluid flow to/ through the coolers ??

Best suggestion I have is to contact www.dieseltrans.com for some expert advice and trouble shooting.

The temp gauge brand is permacool and the place i touched that was so hot was not the cooler it was the remote filter itself. Shooter you said you regularly see 280 degrees is that towing? Everything i have read on TDR sites makes me think that normal temp should be about 180 degrees or so. Shooter you are the first to say you see temps as high as mine. I am confused about what is normal temps?? Where is your sending unit located? Mine is in the hottest point, right before the hot fluid hits the cooler. I may not even have a temp problem, it may be normal temp for where my sending unit is located?? Shooter i took your advice and have contacted someone at (dieseltrans) place that you suggested with questions about it. I had been reading about the remote filter kits for quite a while about the extra filtering protection, that is one of the reasons i installed it and the other reasons were that the filter mount is already threaded with a convenient place to install the sending unit and it increases fluid capacity by 1 quart. Thanks for all your help and input, Tim... ... ... ... .

Towing I rarly see over 220. That is unlocked at about 2400rpm@ 75mph and climbing a long 6+% grade.

In town, city, driving gridlock, ambient 100*+ I will see 280+. I am thinking of a Horton fan to keep the ac cooling and cool the transmission. Even at high outside temps the coolant temp will not get over 190 so the fan does not engage: Thus no cooling air through the transmission coolers or a/c condenser.

My sending unit is in the fluid output line to the coolers

I was talking to DC dealer today about my transmission and he suggested I move my transmission cooler in front of the air cooler.

When I checked, on 97s that's where it is.

But maybe some are behind the air cooler and he said the air cooler when it's working is woram and it can prevent the transmission cooler from working properly.

Do you guys not have the pre-cooler water tank?
