Darn oil dipstick broke, tried pliers then magnet but it went whoosh--down the tube and out of sight.

Long story, but I can't get my truck registered without the dipstick fixed--they say they gotta check the oil before doing the smog test--(its a referee station, so I can't just go somewhere else)

so now its kind of an EMERGENCY

How hard is it to remove the dipstick tube from the block? I haven't looked yet, and wondering if it is straight forward and easy... like to do it this weekend

thanks

Should be attached by just some brackets and bolts and pull out of the transmission, "O" ring seal holds it into the Trans.

You will have to remove the starter to get to it. The tube is attached with a spring clamp just above the oil pan flange. I have never removed one, but it shouldn't be too hard from what I can see. Unbolt the top from the intake and twist (after removing the clamp), I'm guessing.

Spray the heck out of it with engine degreaser where it meets up to the block before you do it. When I've done it, I clean it up as best as possible, change her out. THEN change the oil. No matter what you do, every time you open up the system, from a fill cap or anywhere else, you contaminate the fluid with debris. I personally dont want that crap in my galleries, or building up in the pump, or clogging up my filter prematurely.

Heat the tube at the base with a propane torch ''heat not melt'' the tube that is pressed in the block is knurled to hold it. Then warm the new tube and it will slide right on.

The tube is pressen onto a steel sleeve and then a spring clamp. It is up against the engine adapter plate and the side of the block behind the starter. It is a bugger to get at without the starter being removed but I have done it once while laying ontop of the valve covers and reaching down. Its not a fun job and yeah, change the oil after. Shmootsy falls in. :(
