I have a whine, not sure if it's transmission or transfer case or what. It makes it when decellerating and badly in reverse. It gets worse as a downshift decelerating, like in 4th I rarely hear it... 3rd I hear it sometimes, and 2nd just about always whines (don't use 1st of course). And when backing out of a space in reverse in really whines bad. I changed the transmission gear oil twice and changed the transfer case fluid (ATF) when I first got the truck 8K miles ago. I know it's very hard to decribe this noise, but whine is the best way I can think of. My bro said possibly the mainshaft in the transmission, just wanted to know otherss opinions also.

Possibly something in the transfer case or mebe the front driveshaft? Try driving in 4x4 in a straight line on pavement, and see if it still makes the noise.

Other than that, I`m an auto guy. . cant help ya there stick-dood =P

if these truck clutch system is like any other it may be the throw out bearings they wine like a rear end when they are going bad and normally sound like it almost coming from under the driver feet at idle if it still makes the noise when not moving but ear next to the shifter arm you should be able to hear the vibration and noises from the bearing in the shifter arm.

Tried it in 4WD, no difference at all. Even tried 4lo actually. I'm gonna try to take the front driveshaft off and see if it changes. I changed the front diff gear oil today and it seemed (unless it's all in my head) that the noise lessened. Although today it was substantially cooler out and I was running with the windows down instead of up with A/C on.

It makes no noise at idle or accelerating just decelerating and reverse, I don't think it's a throwout bearing.

Never thought about rear end bearing, suppose it's a possibility that the noise could travel up through the drivetrain and make it sound like it's transmission. Something to look into, thanks for the idea.

Anybody else?

this may sound dumb but I had this happen to me once the metal plate behind the front brake bent once and rubbed on the rotor which made me think I had a bearing going out in the wheel it must of got hit by something on the road and bent it into the rotor its probably not it but never know.

Hey something like that is worth a shot especially since it doesn't cost me anything to check it, I'll check the dust shield tomorrow for rubbing.

What happens if you get it into reverse, get it rolling good, then pop it out of gear and release the clutch (free-wheeling in reverse - do it in a big empty parking lot!)? If it still makes noise, it might be an indication of a rear-end issue.

My 2002 started making a noise similiar to your problem. I traced it to a loose pinion nut on the rear axle. Put truck in neutral on level ground and crawl under and rock drive shaft back and forth and watch for play.

It stops making noise. Here's what makes me think it's transmission- In forward gears it makes the whine when decelerating. However, in reverse it makes the whine when accelerating and stops making the noise when decelerating in reverse only.

Hcole-I did that and it seemed to have an average amount of slop given the 254K miles it has the spider gears are probably shot.

check this out.

I bet it is in your transfercase. My frinds was doing the same thing and it was a snap ring broke. If u take the rear tail housing off your transfer case u will see a barring rite in front of that there should be a snap ring. check and see if it is mia. Thanks Justin

When I was changing u-joints I noticed the snap ring was broken and bought a kit from Tri County Machine to fix it. Its a two piece collar that fastens with two allen screws and loctite. Their # is 1-860-642-7033. Can't remember if they have a web page. Its very beefy and should definitely last a few miles.
