AFC cover on the bench now--Questions! thanks

Got the AFC housing off--could use some real time help!

Installing my #11 plate (off ebay)

also have a springs I bought used but no directions to install those

putting off the 3gsk for now, don't want to get in that far

SO. . --The plate came with a jig, to mark the position of the stock fuel plate; I screwed it into place

NOW do I just remove the stock plate, using a magnet to keep the stuff from falling in?

My other question is about the afc springs, which are different than the gov springs, right?

I have a 98 12v 215pump 5speed

is there only one spring used in the AFC housing?
This would be the time to install it right, while the housing is off?
thanks

the torque plate is a direct replacement... dont drop anything in the pump i have my tst #5 plate all the way up along with hte afc housing... .

OK, my new fuel plate is in place, and I want to try it all the way forward,
so i slide it towards the front of the engine,
HOW TIGHT DO i HAVE TO MAKE THE TORQUE PLATE SCREWS?
people keep talking about moving this stuff forward and back
should I use the impact driver to reinstall, or is just tight as i can get with a screwdriver
enough?
if it goes right the first time, hopefully I'll only be messing with the starwheel after this... .

I didsconnected my fuel solenoid, thought it would make things easier...

is this wrong? will placing my torque plate work ok with it disconnected?

Also, my fuel plate kit came with a 7/16" hose barb.

I removed the stock one--it attaches to my turbo waste gate steel line

Is this where a boost elbow would go?
the new barb has a very small hole compared to the stock barb,
so it would really decrease the amount of air going to the wastegate

Has anyone seen this used instead of an elbow?

About the AFC springs,

I have a 215 hp engine, I don't understand which is the better spring to use
TST recommends the medium (stiffer) spring,
but then says that the lighter spring will give even greater increase in low-boost responsiveness, at the expense of more smoke if heavy throttle is used before sufficient boost is achevied. .

I;m thinking go with the medium spring, easier to dial in and still an improvement, yes?

The torque plate should be an easy drop in. it would be hard to drop it into the pump but be carefull with the screws or you will be going fishing. I would star with the plate just a little forward of center and see how it works out. The AFC spring is easiest if you do it at your workbench wiht the afc off the truck. Just unscrew the 4 screws on the back of the AFC and carfully remove the nut (10mm if I recall correctly). I say carefully because it is under a little tension and the spring and washers could fly out if your not paying attention. Put the new spring in and replace the diaphragm and washers in the same location and orientation as the came off. tighten the diaphragm nut and slide it into place. Press the rear cover snug against the AFC making sure that the diaphragm lip seats in the groove all the way around. Tighten the 4 screws back in. A decent twist of the screwdriver is all that is necessary, no need to breack out the impact driver on anything except maybee to remove the stock anti-tamper screw on the AFC housing.

A little long winded but I hope it helped. You should also be able to get some instructions off of tstproducts.com.

Get em tight with the screwdriver and then just a touch more with the impact just to make em a little tighter than hand. On my 96 the solenoid did not come off but if it worked for you don't worry about it. if the barb doesn't have some type of hole to let the pressure escape it will not fool the wastegate but maybe slow down the reaction time. I would get the adjustable elbow I hear they are on ebay for a couple of bucks. The afc spring is different from the gov spring.

Heres the afc spring TST AFC Spring Kit

Heres instructions for the fuel plate http://www.tstproducts.com/INSRUCT98.pdf

LVJUNIOR, thanks, thats what I needed to hear about the afc spring, i have the tst instructions now, but your description makes things clear.
Appreciate it!

I looked for the elbow on ebay today, couldn't find one... sent the guy who used to sell them an inquiry, but I couldn't find any off hand

I was planning to buy one from any parts company, about $25 shipped,

BUT this barb I have does have a very small hole, so pressure gets thru, just not as easy as the larger bore one

I'm thinking I'll try installing it...

How will i know if the hole is too small?

You should be running a boost gauge if you run a fuel plate. Keep your boost under 35 psi on your stock turbo and you will be fine. I have mine set to about 32 psi If I mash it all the way. TST sell the boost elbows the company that had the instructions didnt see eem on the web site but give em a call. too much boost your hole is too small. not enough and its too big

thanks kenny61, thats what I needed to know.

I installed gauges so I could start doin' this stuff...

so I think I"ll install the new barb and see what happens,

if its too small I can switch it out pretty easily.

thanks for the help! Jenni

And now the fun starts!! A little movement here with the plate, afc housing, moving the starwheel forward and back, etc. You can make it run like a champ with little smoke, but not the first time. Will take some tweaking. Oh, and don't forget, you may as well go ahead and do the kdp and timing advance also.

Forgot to add that the lighter afc spring will probably give you more smoke than you want. I would try the medium first.

PDR cam equals instant spool up

Just got my PDR cam installed. Wow. It spools up almost instantly. at 1800rpm it is like my boost gage is hooked directly to my accelerator pedal

OK, I did something wrong here...
I don't have good low end power, but it surges in 3rd to 4th
I make just a puff of black smoke when I jump on it

I did use the medium spring in the afc.
When I reinstalled the #11plate, I slid it full forward towards the radiator.
I read the TST directions and turned the starwheel full clockwise looking straight on with the diaphram off... then replaced the diaphram and turned the shaft just until I thought I felt something touching.
The way I turned the starwheel, it would be in the direction towards the engine if it were in place. .
When I went to make an adjustment, the only thing I see under the hex plug is the shaft and spring! No starwheel accessible there
So what did I do wrong? Do I need to take it out and turn the starwheel the OTHER direction?

thanks hsmith, I did do my kdp (changed my siig to show it) and I I'm definitely going in for a timing and tune up with a mechanic, but thought it I get it closer it won't cost quite as much, and it will run much better until I get in to do it.

I'm not sure what a PDR cam is, but I'm pretty sure its a far cry from my modding to do list, looking at all the stuff you've done so far :-laf

Turn the star wheel so it in the center of the hole. Slide the AFC housing full forward. You should give you your bottom end back then adjust for smoke from ther
