2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Help! Keep blowing fuse!

My '95 3500 reg cab 2wd keeps blowing the 15amp fuse on the side of the dash. Changed the headlight switch and still popping. Anybody have any ideas?

It will blow the fuse as soon as you turn on the switch most of the time. Sometimes it takes a few seconds.

I'd bet money that the big wiring harness that runs over the driver's side inner (metal) fender is rubbing on something... and shorting out.



My '98 did the same thing - this blowing fuse business. Check your wiring out in that location... That area is a pain... but the wires rub up against the ABS (if so equipped) and so forth and short out...

I will check it out. I hope that is what it is. I am tired of messing with it. I did notice something though. I pulled the headlight toggle switch halfway between parking lamps and headlights and I could make all the parking,instrument,side marker,etc lights come on,but the black wire w/yellow tracer got hot and started to melt just behind the switch. I looked at my book and saw that wire goes to the front parking lamps. So could that mean that my problem lies within that wire and bulbs?

Anything is possible. Check the grounds up there too.

There are two connectors under the cab on the frame, if you unhook them and still blow the fuse you have eliminated the taillight harness as the source of the problem.



On my '99 the RH taillight pigtail shorted the taillight wire to the ground wire for the backup light.



If you have recently installed Optima batterys, the outboard bolt on the driver side can be screwed through the main harness if the bolt is not shortened or a spacer used.

I think I might have it fixed. I noticed that when you remove the front and rear corner lights that it did not blow the fuse. I replaced the two orange bulbs upfront and the four clear bulbs out back and drove it to work today and it has yet to blow the fuse. Hope that fixed it.
