Archived Help Knocking/clicking noise VIDEO

I have had this engine out twice i replaced both the rod bearings and main bearings. everything was really tight and in spec. valve lash is . 010" intake. and . 020" exhaust. pistons are in great shape, cylinders still have a cross hatch. This is a 2001 engine with 140k miles with 5 speed. Has anyone ever had a noise like this?? you can hear it clicking when you crank it before the truck starts.

I didn't listento the video but if it is whlie you are cranking I would check out starter and fly wheel.

At the risk of showing my ignorance, here goes-- Since you state that it can be heard while cranking, perhaps a diagnosis could be made if you'd disable it from starting (I'm not sure how you do this on a 24 valve). Then when you crank it you could hear it better and longer than you do when you allow it to start.

Don't know much about 24 valves. Did you take a look at lift/injection pumps?

Sounds like a valve train problem... . broken valve spring, bent pushrod, bad rockers. I would take the rockers and pushrods off 1 cylinder at a time, start it and listen.

OK now that I have my mind back on the ground. WOW ok I'm back... . Get an enginge stetescope or a long screw driver or metal rod hold it to your easr and listen to strategic spot on the engine and try to localize where the noise is coming from that should be able to help you narrow it down

Are the wrist pins too tight/too free? Any wear on the piston skirts? Sounds like something's slapping in there for sure . . .

what would cause a good clutch to make that noise?

What is the oil pressure doing? Have you put a oil pressure test guage on the engine to verify oil pressure?



It almost sounds like a partial dead miss at idle (if that is a proper description). If you have the wrenches to reach all of the injector couplers, you can try breaking torque on each injector to determine if there is a miss. The coupler you break torque on that does not make things worse is the offending cylinder.



If the oil pressure is normal, my first suspicion would be valve train related as mentioned above. Pull the valve cover and start checking rocker arms and push rods.



If the valve train is OK, the next place I would look is the clutch area. As already mentioned, an engine stethiscope can help you localize and narrow down the area of the engine the knock is coming from.

So, if he puts the clutch "in" then the noise should cease, as the disc would no longer be driven, correct?
