98. 5 24 valve with auto. parked truck 15 minutes later tried to crank and will not. checked injector lines after spinning over for a while had fuel to them finally got it to crank. if you put it in any gear without pressing pedal engine will die have to work tomorrow can anyone out there help me thanks ronnie

Seems like another case of no fuel pressure gauge and guessing if lift pump in out or going out. Do get gauge . Could be the throttle position sensor ,or the injector pump . Hope this helps Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY:D

Had one in here like this (same year, auto, and same symptoms) just a while ago, same thing, I could get it to start, (using alternate methods) but when put in gear it would die. After some testing, it ended up being the VP-44 (injection pump). BTW, the truck had great fuel pressure at the time~ 18psi.

See if you can have the codes read, most auto parts stores have scan-tools, and they will run the test for you, write down all of the codes it brings up, and then tell us what they are.

Good luck, Rob

got codes?

ok here are the codes. i know some of them do not apply to problem but any help will gladly be appreciated P0743,P1389,P0753,P0720,P0748,P1765,P1693,P1689,P0380. a couple of these will not erase. one of them is the P0380 something must be wrong with the glow plug system please help in any way you can. thanks ronnie cooley

I don't know what to tell you. Almost all of the codes you listed are related to transmission parts. I am not a transmission guy, so I can't help. here is a list of diagnostic codes to check them with.

No glow plugs on the Cummins.

Only an Intake Grid Heater,, Looks like a toaster oven, of some sorts.

Sounds like a power distribution problem, as most of the trans codes can be caused by a failed trans relay or power. Did you check all of your fuses?

codes

ok i erased all codes except p1693 and p0380 what does this mean going to replace lift pump tomorrow if i can get one and will let yall know something later thanks turbinesurgun

P0380 is:

Intake Air Heater Relay #2 Control Circuit (not heater element)

P1693 indicates that an error is recorded in the companion module, means nothing by itself, probably has to do with P0380 stored in ECM.

fuel pressure

i checked the fuel pressure it was 11-13 at idle. if i spin the truck over and it does not crank the lift pump will still run 15 to 30 seconds even with the key off what is the deal thanks ronnie cooley
