HELP!! I just went over a RR crossing and landed pretty hard, auto trans now thinks it is in neutral no matter what I do. I checked the shifter linkage to the trans, OK. I made sure that I did not simply have the transfer case "pop" to neutral. No matter what the transfer case or the gear selector is set to, the truck just sits there in neutral. I looked at all of the connections, etc. Any transmission guys out there got any ideas??

Thanks.

You can feel the detents when moving the transmission gear selector?

With the transmission in neutral position, what happens when you move the transfer case lever? Should feel something.

With the transmission in gear, moving it obviously should give the "knashing of teeth" noise.

I feel the problem is in the transfer case. I don't believe that it is engaging.

Did you complain to the railroad folks about that crossing? They are liable for damages to vehicles caused by faulty crossings. If they give you any static, contact your state corporation commission, state DOT, and the state attorney general. Just mentioning that these guys are next on your call list might give an offer to pay to fix your rig.

a smaller car could get someone killed if they went left of center and have a head on collision.

Rear tires did leave and land under power. . This railroad crossing was made a lot more evil than it really is by the driver (me) I just got the T-Rex kit and have been playing a bit. Broken input shaft sounds quite possible. From what I recall, I was at about 45 and had the TC locked up, the take off and landing was not very smooth. (I realized I was a bit fast) so backed out of it as I left and the landing caused me to inadvertently add power just as it landed. The trans is an ATS IV but I did not get the hardened input shaft. Guess that is what I will install if that is what I broke. . Well, it's off to the local transmission shop for a breakdown. CRAP!

Is there any way to see if the shaft is broken without R&R the trans??

Thanks Tim. I will advise once I see what I did.

Transfer case NOT in neutral. It will shift normally from 4L-N-2H-4H. You can feel it shifting. Also, when in park, the truck stops. All output seems OK, no input. Trans selector has absolutely no effect regardless of the gear you select. Input shaft sounds probable or other power transfer component of the 47RE.

Update. Pulled the pan, nice and clean. Spoke with ATS. They said about 99% chance I tweaked the input shaft from my description of events. They do not warranty the input shaft (I wouldn't't either, DC made the part). They will swap out Torque Converter for $200 if I damaged that. Also will work with me if I hurt front pump. The billet input shaft and basket is $762. Gonna put that in if I twisted the old one. Should have it out in the morning and will update with a pic or two.

Well Tim, you were right and I do get to spend the $$ on the billet shaft & basket. Twisted it clean off, probably leaving the little nub still in the basket. I will know ecactly where it sheared and provide pics either tomorrow evening or in one week (goin to the beach fir a week), depending how soon the transmission shop gets it apart. They will also be checking the pump and rest of the trans for any additional problems. Hope to be back on the road soon. Ordering an ATS billet input/clutch basket assy in the morning.

electronics engineer (apps)

Wanting to know what extremely high resistance can you turn on transistors or can you turn on transistors on at that high resistance. The resistance on my Apps is extremely high. . Also wanting electrical specs for the apps if any has please let me know. Have a 1 ton 98. 5 dodge 24V Thank You 2-ND TIME :D

Sounds like what mine was doing when I lost the input shaft. Cept I was compressioning downhill under exhaust brake. Might as well build it while they got it open.

Got lucky, twisted clean off right in front of the the drum. Going to change a few bushings, seals and try to break something else!! I will post a couple of pics after I get back from the beach. The pic should look just like pics that others have posted. .

Sweet Sounds like minimal damage report to me (Pump and flexplate being O. K too is a +) Should be mint when yer done!!

All is OK (except shaft) Trans guy is replacing the seals and a couple of bushings up front. Should be going again in two (ish) days, pending works & weather. Changing the rear main seal jut because, 2nd time the trans has been out. Looks like a small toilet seat! HUGE.

Took my alternator in to check/replace bearings. Looks like the stator windings are burnt every third or 4th winding. Now I am getting a new alternator! Going to do some searches, saw a couple of pics from guys that did something other that the OEM alternator.

Thanks for your help and amazingly fast/accurate diagnosis.

Can anyone help with a better solution than the 400x400 32K file size limitation allowed here?

I have some nice pics but after 10 minutes, I still can't get the pics doen to the microscopic sizes that are allowed. .

Thanks Bob, I guess the TDR would have to keep Terabytes of disk storage if we all put our big pics up here?? That is a nice site, the auto re-size to 250K is also pretty sweet.

The puppy was wore out from watching me R&R the trans!
