When driving on the freeway yesterday I noticed a drop in my oil pressure. Normally my guage reads a little over 40 on the stock guage. The drop seems to happen as I go above 1500 RPM and gets lower as I approach 2000 RPM. It does not go below 20 PSI. I let the truck sit for about 6 hours, then went on a 45 mile trip. The guage read fine untill about 25 mile out, then it started to do it again. does anyone have any suggestions on what to check ?? I am running a Amsoil double bypass filter system, but the way I understand it, if the filter should clog, it would just buypass the filter. I did check the oil, and topped it off, but no change.

Thanks :( :( :(

If the oil level was O. K. it was most likely the Oil Pressure Sending unit. They are know to just up and call it quits one day. I ran a hard wire for a mechanical gauge. DON'T go to the dealer for a replacement sending unit unless you are a masochist (sp) :D .

Its not the oil!

I would agree it is the sending unit. I had a similar experience and a new sender fixed. Not a expensive part to change.

I ran 5W30 oil for a while. It would run maybe 2 - 5lbs less pressure the 15W40 but it was stable and moved up and down then same as thicker oil. It also ran 10 degrees cooler oil temps!

Mine took a special socket to get out. The replacement (NAPA) took a standard deepwheel socket.

Sender is below injection pump on the block, right behind the rear of the steering pump. It is a reach but do able from above.

I run the 15-40 marine deisel Amsoil. It seems like as the engine warms up, that is when it starts the antics. As the RPM increases, the guage will move to the left, but no lower than 20 psi. Does anyone have a part number for the sender ?? Is it pretty much standard, not a Cummins part. I do most of my parts business with Kragen. :) :)

The sending unit number for my 96 was EC PS-233.

That was purchased from CarQuest. Anyone selling standard ignition parts should have the same number of "PS-233".
