Turbos

Doug, I don't mean to hi-jack this thread. But are you still running the turbo you were at the Fall Brawl? How well does it spool up with your auto, do you run a 93% converter? Thanks Steve B.

Steve,

I am still running the same turbo. Spool up if fine but its not an HY-35... ... Currently I am running a 91% converter and a DTT transmission. I tow my horse trailer without any problems and I run 2. 5 injectors for everyday driving. Under WOT and on 5X5 I can get the egt's to 1250* or so with an outside air temp being in the 70's. I would expect to see 50*-100* more egt temp during the summer.

I have run a set of bd 200hp injectors every day and have almost 30,000 miles with no troubles. So far I have a Killer2B turbo and it does a very good job of cooling my set up for what I use my truck for. Most of them miles was with a stock HX-35.

Look into the turbo's offered by BD power there super b lineup support up to 475 hp reasonably priced with downpipe and you can upgrade it to there twin setup in the future I stay away from a hx 40's just because of reliability issue's

There is nothing wrong with an HX40 if you follow the directions... don't go over 40 psi and let it cool down.

I have 25K on mine with some drag racing and its running strong.

i totally agree. i used my pdrhx40/16 as a single gated at 42psi and currently use the very same turbo in my twin setup gated at 25psi.

i can say i have put it to the test with no problems.

reliability issues i've seen or read about are due to trying to squeeze a little more boost out of it.

Not to hi-jack, but I have been stuck in turbo decision land for long time. There are so many choices and factors, the decision can be very difficult for someone not wanting to have to live with a bad selection. Paralysis from analysis is a very easy rut to get into with turbo shopping... .

With AFE intake / 4" exhaust / DDIIIs, are the HX-40/16, B1-2, HT2B/14 (all waste gated) a good choice list for romping around the streets, occassionally running the strip and towing medium (5-7k) weight?

Unfortunately, twins are not in my foreseeable future.

TIA,

Bill

I've got a question for everybody I have an innercooled 1st Gen and am looking to get around 300 reliable towing HP which turbo would you reccomend preferably something with the lowest EGTs possible also whats the safest high EGT.

Thanks Greg

Anybody with an opinion on this?

Bill,

All of the turbos you mentioned are good. The B1-2 is a proven preformer that is tough. When you talk about an HX-40 I would only consider one from Piers as his have a good record of being durable with good spoolup. As for the HT2B-14, I have not run this turbo so I can't give a great opinion..... But the guys that run them seem to be happy, although some of them have a surging or flutter issue that can be a pain.

Just my $. 02 worth,

How would you like to tow with a set of 200hp honed injectors?

I've done it without EGT issues.

My 2001 HO has 200hp injectors(quadzilla/bullydogs), a timing box and a Blue chip FMS. I don't tow with the FMS unless it's light.

I topped a mile+ long grade headed west out of Tulsa on 1-44 grossing 27,042# at 82mph in 6th on the cruise control. I was really suprised it never decelerated. I did hit 1325* pre-turbo on the EGTs. I was running a stock HX-35 in a set of twins with a 32cm HT3B. That was 2 years ago. A 26 cm BHT3B is better, more flow and better spooling w/o higher EGTs.

I've run both the B1-b and KSB1-b with the same injectors. EGTs were a constant worry.

You can tow and drive with minimal smoke and 200hp HONED injectors. It takes a well designed set of twins to do it.

FWIW,

While I agree that PDR has the best 40s, you still have to be careful. R. ebel popped two PDR40s before switching to a B-series and hasn't looked back. IIRC, the PDR40 were not abused (no nitrous or excessive boost).

Maybe Richard can chime in with the details of his PDR40 failures.

That said, PDR40s ARE the best of the HX40s. They have sold MANY 40s, and failures of PDR40s that aren't abused seem to be quite rare indeed. Keep in under 38psi and it should live a while.

Thank you Doug & Justin, I appreciate the feedback.

Would anybody care to compare the Piers HX40 to the B1-2 in terms of spool up and top end?
