I have the 5" MBRP, got it from Mark @ Diesel Performance Parts...

99% of the time, I love the sound, it's loud when you want it to be, pretty quiet during normal driving, has a nice throaty sound... that being said...

We tow a big fifth-wheel, and under load (going up grades etc. ) the drone is pretty bad, especially in the 2000 rpm range, didn't bother me too much at first, but after a couple of years, if I do it again, I'll go back to 4".

If your talking 05 or 06 its got a cat and its regulated by federal law. Some states require checking yearly, others do not but its coming. Cannnot legaly be traded in or sold with it removed. Why do you think it was installed to start with, not JUST cause THEY wanted clean air. Cause THEY are gonna GET clean air as time progresses. The clean air act is going to be tougher and tougher in the next few years.

Hmmm... if I have to keep the cat then I guess there is not much sense in doing a bigger inch system since the constriction point will still be the cat.

I just called MBRP and they know nothing of the 5" systems 1-888-636-7223 , nothing on the website..... ???? I also have a 05 MBRP catalog and there is nothing in there as well. Magnaflow just released a 5" inlet/outlet diesel high flow converter that will work on this truck. They also have a 4" converter!!

From what I've read the CAT is not the restriction point. Its the MUFFLER. save a lot of money as you already have a full 4 inch system(good till 400 PLUS h. p. )and get a good sounding free flowing muffler. Your LUCKY. The 03/04s you had to change from the turbo outlet pipe back to get a TRUE 4 inch.

Actually the 03/04 requires changing from the turbo cast ELBOW back. Trust me, I just did it - and the results are excellent!

Right you are... The way Dieselperformanceparts's site is laid out, I always thought mine was MBRP, I've even called it so many times here on this site where Mark Craig frequents, and in emails to them, and I was never corrected?!? :(

I think DC put the cat on there for the simple reason that they are gonna rape you to the tune of $700 for a new one at some point. :-laf

I still have mine but it's in the garage since adding the MBRP which I love. I would have left the kitty on there, but there is no testing of any sort in this state on passenger vehicles right now. No way I would take it off if there was a chance of being busted. .

Mark - thanks, I appreciate the information. I have seen the MBRP 5 inch system on two 03's. They said it was the aluminized. I really like the way they look and sound. They are both running the NV5600 and 4. 11 gears, which makes their final drive ratio close to the G56, however they never run the highway about 70 mph, while I tend to run 75 plus. Consequently I am worried about invasive drone, especially while towing.

What I like about the 5 inch systems is the look and the sound. I am sure they help produce more HP as well, but that is not my biggest concern. I plan to add the hot juice (I think, still undecided) but I think 4 inch is probably big enough.

Based upon that information, what do you think is the best sytem for me.

Mark,

I tow a 10K fiver at 1800-2000 rpms a lot (6-sp trans), so would like to know how much drone there would be with that 4 inch system under a load.

Thanks,

Steve

My loud and your loud are going to be two different things. Find a friend with an exhaust system if you do not want to find out on your own and see what you think. One exhaust system is not going to make more drone then the other if they are both the same diameter. The longer the muffler the less the drone will be. Its the long length of pipe that creates the drone. I always use Walker band clamps 4" wide on all my joints to make sure there isnt any loose fitting connections. Also make sure that there isnt any part of the system being supported or touching anything that isnt insulated.

Been running a Magnaflow 4" with full 4" all the way through and no cat for 80k+ miles now!! Oo. Over time I do believe it is starting to sound like one of my old 12 V's did!! ;)

I've always thought that if drone ever became a problem, one could always wrap the length of pipe between the downpipe and the muffler with some of the hot rod exhaust wrap. It is for temperature and noise. I believe the Eastwood.com has a couple of different selections.

I've never tried this, but before I removed an expensive and efficient exhaust system, I would give it a go. Might be able to have your cake and eat it too!!

Anyone done this??

Well i'm only twenty with a quad cab short bed and i like loud. I straight piped the whole system. Sounds awesome and really turns a lot of heads. On the free way i only hear it when i floor it and pass some one at the same time. Other than that i can't hear it at all and those are at speeds of 70-84. Eventually i will put a turn down pipe on it to quiet it up some and not totally surprise people when i floor it buy them, but if they make you mad you can bet i let them know, especially if their window is down.

hehehehe. I ran flex pipe in place of the cat and muffler for geee, 15,000 miles or so. It was NICE at WOT. The Cummins really screamed! This one time I got cought in a "construction, this lane is ending realy fast" deal. I'm cruising in level 1 of the non-hot juice at 75mph, figure out where I'm at and just punch it, WOT, as soon as I move the go peddle to the floor I start pressing the "UP" button on the Attitude, if you ever drove a truck with one, you know it's like pressing the go peddel even more if it could.

As I get level 5, I'm coming close on the end of my lane, I'm at 105mph and close to 3200rpm just as I pass by this ford F150 with his windows down.

I can only imaging the guy, looking in his rear, "wow, that trucks moving fast, hmm sounds loud". then I pass "AAAAAAHHHH!!! MY EAR!!!!!". :). then you see his truck shake left to right as the air vacum wooshes back and forth.
