Will you let your insurance company ride in your vehicle?

Which July 4th will you watch?

Mike,

Day late and $$$ short again for you to come back to the VW TDI darkside. Bug has 369K on it.

What's the name for this Cady gonna be?

Gary

If the rust hadn’t started I would have fixed poor old Hoopty and gone the distance.

Hoopty Deux looks just like the day it rolled off of the assembly underneath! Incredible what a life lived in Florida does for a vehicle....

I say that every time we vacation in Florida. The cars there are incredible. I always wondered what it would be like to have a car last that long.

I saw what looked like a mid to late 2000's Ford Ranger at Lowe's over the weekend. The rockers and cab corners were rusted through, and the frame was totally gone. Top of the bed was against the cab with about a 4" gap at the bottom. Truck couldn't have been much over ten years old and it belongs in the scrap yard .

When we were in Orlando last week, I noticed a 2005 Ram 1500 2x4 quad cab in a parking lot with a for sale sign on it. It had a few dents and scratches but was clean and totally rust free. $4500 obo. If I wasn't already towing something, that truck would have been on a uhaul trailer on the way back to PA with me. Probably could have got it for $3500 cash. That would have been perfect to put in the barn as a future body donor for my '07.

I really don't miss the road salt back in OH. Ruined two nice rides my first car a 1968 Olds Delmont 88 convertible and my first hand shaker a 1975 Camaro 350 4V 4 spd, bought that one new.

The 18 year old VW ain't showing rust and the 13 year old Dodge is doing great.

Houpty deux, whoopie doo still sounds French.

Make mine Freedom Fries please.

After college I moved to AZ from PA. I couldn't believe how easy it was to work on old vehicles - nothing was rusted together.

I did the same only after my USAF time. Amazing difference between Pa. and Az. pertaining to rust and stupid regulations.

Must be nice to do work on vehicles when it doesn't always require a torch and cutoff wheel.

It was WONDERFUL! I bought several older cars and loved it! Then we moved to Texas - just a little more rust. Then we moved to VA - more rust, but not near as bad as PA or Ohio. But my 77 Ramcharger, which had NO rust in AZ started the typical rust after a few years here. :(

Yes it is. So is having a 15+ vehicle that still looks new.

Dave

My uncle and aunt live outside of Sacramento CA. Every time I visit them, I am jealous. They have a '66 Mustang that they purchased in PA but has been in CA since 72. Still looks great and it gets driven. They also have a '90 or so Toyota Camry with something over 400K on it. Still solid and clean all around. It's amazing.

They are approaching '90 and starting to slow down as far as the driving is concerned, but my uncle still really takes pride in his older cars.

It doesn't take long with the road chemicals they use anymore.

Yup!

But in AZ (valley of the sun location (Phoenix, Tempe, Sun City, Gilbert, Glendale, etc)), if the car isn't covered or garaged, the interior gets trashed quickly due to the heat!

Do they still use cinders on the mountain roads or have they been forced over to chemicals?

I played golf out there once a few years ago during a job interview. It was 108 or 109 that day if I remember correctly. I've never been as worn out as I was after a round. There were some other reasons why I didn't accept the offer, but I don't know if I could live in that day in and day out. Of course, I'm sure you get used to it after a while.

When folks say..."but it is a dry heat"....I say - yes, just like sticking your head in an oven!

When I was out there visiting relatives in 2010 they used chemicals in Flagstaff.

When my wife and I visited friends in Flagstaff in ‘98 all the vehicles had a dull black coating on them. They told me the highway Dept mined cinders and spread them for traction and melting hardback. The cars looked awful but none were rotten.
