Smarty vs stock 48RE life span

Fuel delivery problem?

Guys, I can’t decide which TC/VB combo to go with. This much I know: the stock TC must go. I am tired of the looseness. I am only considering only the Goerend Brothers and DTT. Dave G is a treasure as many here have noted, and DTT is also known for its product and service after the sale. So I could hardly go wrong with either, I suppose. My 04 is stock except for the cool duals. I may add a smarty for the 30 or 60 hp gain, but I am very conservative with the throttle cause I want her to last. So, I may or may not go for a chip or tuner. Truck is driven primarily empty, but I will occasionally pull a 3,000-4,000 pound load. I am not into drag or street racing, and I have nothing to prove.

Stefan at DTT has stated that their single disk TC for $975 and custom calibrated VB with 4. 4 ratio lever, billet accumulator and servo, and VB install kit are all I need. He said a triple disk would be a waste of money and that I could set a Smarty wherever I wanted and not have a worry. Dave Goerend has specified his triple disc (with lifetime warranty) for $1295 and his own tuned valve body, lever, etc. Not much difference in the pricing. I am looking for a nice firm shift, not harsh, in a long-lasting product. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Either one will get you what you want and are an excellent choice. You probably have more room to grow with the GB setup before having to do some major upgrades. If you ever decide to tow a big 5'er or other trailer the GB setup will be a plus. Both should give you what you want for a shift and are backed by quality companies.

Flip a coin. You can't lose. ;)

I tow a 13-14k 5er and am wondering what I should do. Thinking of a smarty and feel I will need transmission work before to long. What would one suggest for my application? I'm just looking for something reliable for the long run and that will hold up to towing that kind of weight. tHaNkS...

I would give the nod to Dave G. Before making my selection I called, several, Dave G was the best to deal with and he still is dealing with me over a year later. I was not impressed with the other companies. One of them actually tried to scare me into using all of their upgraded parts. Saying if I don't things will break. Well guess what, with the breakage I have had none of it has been the transmission. Dana 80 spider gears, two front drive shafts, freeze plug, broken axle, ladder bars.

Which TC/VB

It is going to be difficult for me not to give the business to Dave considering he has spent easily 2 hours on the phone with me describing how things work. I followed a good part of it, but mostly I was just real impressed with his patience and knowledge. He will likely get my order tomorrow. With his triple disc, his VB and 3. 8 lever, I should have no trouble with the mild mods and light loads I intend to expose the truck to. Plus, he offers a lifetime warranty on the TC which DTT does not (theirs is 2 years, I think). I agree that I really can't go wrong, here. Thanks.

ha ha ha ha... you're funny JohnCollins... the first step toward getting help is to admit you have a problem... and if you're going to drop the bucks on bombing your transmission, well... its just a matter of time! Hey, we're all hooked too, so don't feel like the Lone Ranger.

Me, I'm going with DTT. I think they're both fine transmissions, you have Dave close by and I have one of DTT's builders here in town. That makes the decision easy!

Good luck! You'll have a transmission that is on par with the mighty Cummins!

OK, I have a problem but I can stop before I go to far. Right? Ha!

Dave actually is not close by, I am in NC and he is in Iowa which is about 1000 miles. Of course, by comparison, he is a lot closer to NC than Manitoba.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Dave G spent a long time on the phone with me. I also had one place try to "scare me" into their product. Thats the first way to lose with me. Dave didn't try to tell me he was the best or to use his product. he just explained everything he had to offer. He will definately be getting all my transmission business.
