Engine Mounts

16cm exh housing for EARLY 91

Ok everyone, a little help here.

I am ready to buy the following items, and am looking for a good place to source from: Oo.

1. ISSPRO EV gauges (EGT pre-turbo, Boost, Trans) and 3 gauge dash mount pod.

2. 16cm exhaust housing. Not sure what brand to go with, am seeing prices from $125-$190. Anyone have a recommendation?

I understand that I could use a 12cm wg unit, but prefer not to mod my downpipe at this time.

Additionally, I could use some advice on replacement injectors. Probably won't do these immediately, but near future. My usage is 60% running empty, otherwise pulling 2 horse tag or 20'gn flatbed loaded with hay/equipment.

I have the Mopar tach, mounted by previous owner, just to right of hump in dash. I am a little concerned that the GV dash pod will not fit with its current location. I assume that I would have to move the pod to the right slightly, but don't like the idea of leaving a hole in the dash:( Anyone ever try a 2 gauge plus a single gauge A pillar pod approach?

Ok, let's spend my money!

Pat

PPeters,

My recommendation is to contact PDR They should have everything you need for a good price and they offer excellent service.

Go with the 16cm housing. If you plan to crank up your fuel, then the wastegated 12cm will probably prove to be too small. Plus they're way more expensive than a non wastegated housing and you have to shorten the downpipe. FWIW, the only reason I have a wastegated 14cm housing is that I didn't know better when I bought it. Could have saved a few hundred$$$. It does work nicely though. :D

As for the injectors, get some POD's if you want the most power or the PowerWagons (bosch 185's, I think) if you want a good balance of power and smoke. :D

Cheers,

Sean

Piers

Call and talk to the guys at Piers. I bet if you told them you found the same housing cheeper at another distributor they might try and cut you a deal. One thing to keep in mind, when I was looking for the cheapest housing I found one for less than 120. 00 but it did not comewith new gaskets. Piers is really nice to work with and was worth the extra few bucks just for the good advice from Nascar Mark!

What all is involved in putting in the exhaust housing?? I may get one if they don't cost but 117-150 bucks. I think it would be good to get my guages too and put them on while the turbo is off?

Steve

I did mine that way Steve, installed the housing and guages at the same time. Works out nice to drill and tap the exhaust manifold while you have the turbo off. Saves any worries of metal chips going through the turbo. That is, as long as you want the pryo to read pre-turbo. Piers did throw in the gaskets with the housing, by the way. Got it while he was at Thunder in Muncie last June. ;)

Yup, if you're gonna change the 'hot end' then you may as well do the pyro install at the same time.

If you need a good detailed instruction let me/us know, there's a nice set of instructions (generic) that will spell it out.

Next, decide were you want you power band... ... low thru mid range around town or mid thru high end highway.

If you do mostly around town with some highway but empty then go with the 14cm (even nongated)

If you do around town but also highway and tow/carry heavy then got for the 16cm nongated.

Either way they're cheap to get from PDR, with all the gaskets you need and support too, as in lots.

Remember, any housing smaller than 16 means trimming your exhaust downpipe (at the turbo connection) and taking out 1 1/4" because the smaller housings have a longer "tail".

Also, a "general rule" of thumb is for every size you go down (eg: 16-14) you gain approx. 2-2 1/2psi in boost. Going up you loose the same,... roughly, assuming no other changes like injectors, pump etc.

Your safe max EGT is 1250*F period. You can exceed that but only for short bursts, and you MUST allow cooldown if you run it up. I refuse to shut down until I'm well below 300*F.

Merry Christmas !!

Isspro Gauges & Dash Pod....

I went straight to Isspro for my gauges. Keep in mind, the Electrical EV gauges, except for the boost, have amplifier boxes that have to mounted, also. A great place to run your wires out of the firewall is where the rubber plug is with the vacumn line for the AC/Heater controls, above & behind the turbo. Since I removed the ABS box behind the glovebox, it was a good place to mount the amplifiers. I purchased my 4 gauge pod from Truck's Unique in Albuquerque, they said it came from TST, so that might be a good source. I did cut the "wire tunnel" off the right side in order to move it towards the left to clear my Tach.

The guys are right about about PDR. IF I had it to do over

again,I would go with ,Piers.

For some step by step instructions if you go to the TST

website,www.tstproducts.com and go to turbine install,

you should find some pretty good instructions. If I remember

right, they also have good instructions and photos for

installing a pyro in the exhaust manifold.

OK, spoke with Al at Piers yesterday, he is putting together a package and sending me a quote. NICE GUY:) I have spoken with many vendors over the past few weeks, and this guy was friendly and very knowledgeable. IMO that is worth a few extra bucks, and from the sounds of what I'm hearing from others PDR is first class.

Sean: He is steering me toward the Bosch 185's after our discussion. I'm looking for power and longevity, and I guess that the 185's are a little friendlier.

Bob: Instructions, yes please:D :D Any help provided the mechanically challenged will be rewarded in the next life;) From your comments going with the 16 is the right choice for me.

Hutchew: Nice setup. I think that will be my approach, 3 pod on the dash. Didn't think about cutting the tunnel, will have to look it over when installing. I need to take my current tach apart and measure the back of the guage. If it is 2 1/16th, Al said there is a 4 pod available, so I may be able to mount all in the dash pod and fill the hole in the dash from the cup mount.

Only bad part about doing everything at once is no baseline to judge how good the mods have made my life. Oh well.

Pat

Underdog: thanks for the link:D :D

drilling now

 Hey Pat, even if you don't do the guages with the turbo change, go ahead and drill and tap for the pyro probe now. You can put a brass plug in it and believe me, you will be glad when you do get the pyrometer. Stay away from the rib in the casting when you drill, it causes havoc with a drill bit! Tim:cool:

Hey Hutch',,

That is a SWEET looking setup, I really like the look of those gauges. RATS!!! My wife is gonna be PO'd again... ;)

Also, I agree with the suggestion to drill the pyro hole now and use a plug for the time being. It presents no problems for you since the turbo is off, and once you've got the hole positioned right, you'll be free of the anxiety concerning metal chips into the turbo as mentioned.

The tips I had in mind are the instructions on the tst web site. I also have a set of "how to" that relate to the Banks Install Instructions.

I'll email them to you.

Last, the 185's will give you a nice shot in the pants... . they are fairly versatile in that you can tweak em pretty nicely with some pump adjustments, and they are a bit cleaner than the POD's for smoke around town.

Thanks for the compliments..........

The Isspro EV gauges are awesome at night, but during the day, they suffer badly from glare. The lens is concave towards the outside, and act like a mirror, making the gauge hard to read. I think if they made the face flat, it would work much better... .

Hutch', guys,

You know, I've been runing the 'older' Isspro gauges for a while and when I had the transmission work done I had to get a new transmission temp guage (Isspro)

It came with the same curved glass face... and it also suffers from glare off the rear cab window. The flat glass face of the older style is much better in that there is no glare or reflection, but the lighting is not as nice..... bummer...

Ok everyone, I really appreciate the imput. Had a great phone conversation with Louise and Piers on Friday, and so I placed my order with them.

Piers recommended that for my needs a 16cm housing and pump tweeks are all that is necessary (to start with). We had a good discussion about POD's v. s. Bosch 185's, and he thought that I should wait and see how things develop after the housing and pump adjustments. I had Louise (PDR) on the phone measuring bullet cups for height and answering all sorts of questions. All I can say is GREAT SERVICE.

The only place I have been able to find dash pods at is Banks, but for a 3 pod with base it's almost $90. Everyone else I spoke with was out of stock with no delivery, including PDR.

So for now, 16cm housing and ISSPRO EGT, Boost, and transmission temp (all in the EV line) mounted in bullet cups. It will be interesting to see what kind of performance boost I get with the coming mods. Piers could have easily made more money on the sale, but I really appreciate the honesty. I'm sure that when the time comes to "fuel up" I will go back to PDR:D :D

Now all I have to do is wait for the goodies to arrive... ... Oo. BTW, the housing is Holset, and Gomers price is not $117, its $138 (I called, price on web is wrong).
