Pics of Mercedes TD in a CJ-8

Need a little help we have installed and made motor mounts and brakets to put a 84 mercedes TD in a 82 CJ-8. I understood that there was no computer in this system. I WAS WRONG. hence the problems. The bosch inj. pump looks like ours, on a 94-98. 5 CTD, but there is a computer. The computer operates a elec. silinoid in the boost line to the AFC (mercedes calls this something else) they use it to prevent engine damage acording to the service info I have found (cut out fuel). the computer also conrols an EGR valve, I understand that EGR is an emissions related component but on gas vehicles doesn't this also control (lower) cylander temps? Does it work the same in this aplication?

I guess my questions for you all out there is can we by pass these systems and run it like my 94 Dodge CTD, and possible adjust the waste gate for 15 lbs of boost instead of 10 to 12. Or would we be risking melting the aluminum cylander head and pistons, it might even be an aluminum block?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I don't know about any of your other questions, but I can shed some second-hand light on the EGR. Appearantly on the Mercedes diesels, the EGR is open only at idle. Once you start to accelerate, the valve closes. It only cools combustion at idle and does nothing the rest of the time. I heard this from a guy who's been around and had a nasty run-in with a Mercedes that had an EGR problem.

The solenoid on the boost line is only there in case of an overboost. If that happens it dumps the pressure to the ALDA (AFC) and reduces the fuel the engine gets, to keep it from blowing up. I just put a boost gauge on mine and eliminated the solenoid.

I would also recommend blocking the EGR and forgetting about it.

thx

I appreciate the info we are going to see if we can have it running this weekend. I will have pictures up shortly, and Ill post any other problems we come across. All in all the fit is pretty good, leaves a lot of room to work on it compared to its original wraper, we are also doing a one peace fiberglass flip forward nose. Its the Mansfield limo. :)

I just picked up a '89 Commanche. It is really clean, but has a blown 2. 5L. I would love to do a diesel conversion on it. If I had a spare Benz motor I'd try it, but I don't. Maybe I'll use an Isuzu motor from a Trooper II. I know where one of those is...

Make sure you let us know how it goes. I'm curious to see if you're happy with the power.

Joe, We got our mercedes motor for the projectfrom a junk yard and walked away for a steel, not sure exactly how much but we are scaveging from 4 cars he has in the lot. My friend ( Mansfield ) put a battery in it previously and it fired right up. He got personal info out of the glove box and called the guy, had an expensive brake issue. I like them. Good luck

ah, next set of questions. Of all the vacuem lines running all over the place end up running to a vacuem control module on the injection pump that give the trans among other things a throttle controled vacuem signal. What should the vacuem signal to the trans be? How important is the vacuem throttle switch on top of the valve cover operated off of the throttle linkage. Any help will be apreciated. Pictures on the way need a fire wire.
