Need Motorcycle hauled from Cheyenne, WY

Need Advice on travelling from Salt Lake City to Phoenis - TODAY... . Here's the story if you can help with some advice - OR if anybody is going there today - he could sure use a ride and help pay and or drive... May be an interesting ride as he's a Manufacturing Engineer for Freightliner here in Portland.

My son (30) is travelling to Phoenix (for a short vacation) on a buddy pass (In-Laws are Pilots). BUT it looks like all the flights from SLC to Phoenix are going to be booked... . and as he flys standby - he may be spending some considerable time in SLC. I just got back from taking him to the Portland Airport and we're trying to develop a Plan B... . His wife and daughter (1 1/2) are flying later this AM - BUT HAVE CONFIRMED TICKETS- so they don't have a problem. ) Now - this is where I need some help... . He is thinking that if things look very bad he may try and just drive - rent a car - from SLC to Phoenix. I know weather is always a big unknown - so here's my ????

1. Where is a great site that gives you good - not yesterday's weather - on road conditions. For example if I look at this site, I may find that the road is experiencing blizzard conditions and would be a nightmare etc.

2. What is the road like between SLC and Phoenix? I've only went south of SLC to travel essentially East - to Denver, so I've never travelled that stretch of road. Under normal conditions what is reasonable driving time? My look at the maps seems to indicate that it's in the neighborhood of 650 miles - but we all know that not all miles are the same... ...

Thanks a million

It is currently snowing very hard here in the Salt Lake Valley. The roads south have a huge amount of snow already, and it is still snowing throughout the state.

I think he would be better off just waiting for a flight, as the weather being reported on TV at this time (7:23 AM MST) is not good for traveling by personal vehicles.

weather map

hammersley,

Here is a site that you might find interesting. http://www.intellicast.com . once on the site, off to the left of the screen, under USweather, click on "RADAR" then when next screen comes up, scroll up till you see the map of the states. Then up above the map , click on long looping. When the next screen comes up, scroll up and you will see the weather systems, and which way they are tracking. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

rained early in phoenix and the weather "experts" are predicting SNOW in AZ down to 5500 feet.

partly cloudy right now 'bout 60 degress and windy. The road to Phx is all high desert and 2 lane from Vegas south.

dodgy at best for a quick road trip. might have him check on flights to Tucson. the road north to phx has never been closed due to snow. rain/flood yes, but not snow...

Maybe he should

Maybe he should consider going a different route and fly to San Diego or LA and then either fly from there to Phoenix or drive since the chances of seeing snow on either I10 to phoenix or I8 to AZ85 to I10 is very slim. If I remember right from my trucking time I think he could also try to fly to Ontario CA or Las vegas NV and drive from there it's like a 5 hour ride or so from both vegas and ontario.

Just a thought

hammersley,

This why I suggested your son

NOT DRIVE from the Salt lake area. This picture was taken this AM, 12-27-2003. We have 2 feet on the ground. Picture was taken at my home in Roy, just 35 miles North of SLC. Many flights out of SLC have been canceled/delayed.

amsoilman,

I don't see 2 feet of snow in your picture any place. Not on the house roof, not on the trailer roof, not on the car and not on the ground.

Did you measure this 2 feet or did some news cast broadcast that it was 2 feet?

WyoJim,

Roof is aluminum, car and drive was cleaned off the night before.

Here is a better picture of the 2 feet accumulation.
