While towing our 28' 5th wheel this weekend, we were just groovin' on down the road and out of nowhere I hear a single chime, BING from out of nowhere. I checked all the gauges and idiot lights and saw nothing amiss. We got the rest of the way to our destination with no further chiming. No chimes on the drive back home. Once we had unloaded the trailer I had to go into town to the dreaded DMV! Well, I was about two miles down the road and BING goes the chime again, and about 45 seconds later a get a double whammy BING BING so I pull over and check all the gauges and idiot lights again, and again, nothing. The truck has done this probably 6 times in the year or so we have had it.

Sooooo, has anyone besides me ran into this situation? If so, what is the remedy? I can't see that anything is showing wrong and there are no codes set when I check that out. If it is no big deal, then that is cool, I can live with an occasional BING, but if there is a problem, I need to get it fixed.

Any help y'all can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Mine dings once in a while. I may take it in for the TSB one day. Or not. Maybe when I have it in for some other service, like getting the leaking pinion seal on my front differential fixed.

Yup, there is a TSB for it for the dealer to reflash the instrument cluster. You can also get eronius SES lights, they will flash on/off for a split second and you can get false "Lamp Out" lights as well. My 03 does the same thing and I can go for 10 minutes with constant binging, gets old quick! But I still haven't taken it in...

There is also another reason our trucks will "chime"... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... when we don't turn off the turn lights. First time that happened to me I looked for several minutes before I discovered why it was shimeing. I'm sure you checked that!

Chiming

I too have experienced the chimes from nowhere. The chiming got to the point that I was ready to drive into a wall just to stop the dang noise.

I eventually noticed a faint lamp out indication once in a while. I replaced all the rear lamps and bingo! No more chimes. The computer monitors the bulb filaments (resistance?) whether or not your lights are on. I suspect that the opening and closing of the rear lift gate may have had something to do with it.

your truck will also chime if there is a tail light out. it usually flashes a light on the dash also. i wonder if you had a short in your trailer wireing?

Fairly common problem. If it is not a bad bulb, it is the sockets in the rear lamps. They were on back order for quite some time, so they must have been a problem. My 03 did it for miles at a time, then would be quiet for weeks. Seemed the bumpier the road, the worse it was. Also, the front control module will have a stored fault with the problem.

the ecm pulses about 2 volts every few seconds down the line and checks for resistance... stick a set of led tail lamps there and watch them flash with the key on and the lamp out light on... they don't have enough internal resistance to keep the ecm happy. external resistors are needed to trick the ecm... the backup lights are not checked, so you could have both burnt out and never know
