HEY everyone this is my first time on here, im on my dads account for him. My parents were on there way to florida when 5th gear went. my dad needs a quick fix for 5th gear cuz the exhaust drone in 4th at about 2500rpm is insane. i also need to know if u guys know of any transmission shops in South Eastern Florida, close to West Palm Beach. so he can get a fully splined shaft and install it when they get home. thanks so much guys!

also about the exhaust, just before they left my dad installed a 4" Dynomax exhaust system with a 5" tip, and hollowed out the cat. any suggestions on a fix for that bad "drone". Oo. Oo.

thanks again

Brad

Hello Brad. Quick fix is subjective. If the only problem is the nut came off the mainshaft, and if your dad has access to the tools, skill, and place, the tailshaft of the transmission can be pulled, the shaft and nut cleaned with non-residue cleaner, the nut put back on with lots of high-strength Loktite. Then tightened to 300 or so ft. lbs. , then using a big hammer and punch, stake the nut to the shaft several times. You've gotta get really violent at this stage.

This might run a few thousand or tens of thousands of miles.

Best plan is to put up with 4th gear till he's back on home turf. Take the secondary roads where 55mph is the norm, see America, enjoy the drive.

Exhaust drone. Some have had good luck attaching (with clamps) long pieces of angle iron to the exhaust pipe between the downpipe and muffler.

Good luck RR

Transmission Shop

Brad,

There is an awesome transmission shop in Jacksonville, FL. It is called "Alvie's". It is a father and son business. They have been doing transmission work for a longggggg time. They are honest, reliable and will fix only what you ask them (if that is what you want). He will not try to "take your money and run".

I would highly recommend this shop.

Here is his phone #: 904 765 6428

The shop is located off of North Main Street in Jacksonville, FL. You would take 95 North to Jax. After you pass through Jax. (all the big buildings) start looking for the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Take the MLK Jr. Pky. South (right) to Main St. Go North (left) to 8019 North Main St. His building is on the right hand side heading North and is painted yellow with palm trees on it. The entrance is in the rear of the building.

His shop is like an operating room... ... You would have to see it to believe it.

We actually live in Sebastian, FL which is closer to West Palm than Jax. But we just moved down here 2 years ago. I have yet to find anyone around "here" that I would trust with a transmission. I'm sure there out there somewhere. I just havent found them yet.

Your parents could go hang out in St. Augustine, FL for a few days while the transmission is fixed. Lots of history in St. Augustine and lots to do up there.

Send me a PM if you need more info.

Hope this helps!

Quick Fix or Permanant Fix ? ?

Brad - Welcome ! ! How about a quick permanant fix. Not kidding here.

Any good mechanic (shop previously mentioned) that can also do a good tack weld cam do this for you without removing transmission. As previously mentioned, pull the tail shaft, clean carefully area, re-install nut ( it just came loose and WILL again ) TACK WELD THE NUT TO THE SHAFT. !

Fixed until ready to replace transmission, might never have to. I tow heavy and hard, lots of miles. 150,000 miles in a year and a half tack is still good. By the way if this trans tows any serious weight I can strongly reccomend adding oil coolers to the sides of the transmission, they work.

I have spoken with many road drivers that made the upgrade, nut reinstall

and they all come loose later when worked hard. By the way there are some here who beleive this is overkill. Best of luck... ... R C Oo.

I talked to your Dad on the phone(Travel Companion) He wasn't but a few miles down the road from the house staying with someone when he called. I really couldn't help much but to tell him some likely places to get it fixed. I don't have the tools, and my welding ain't so hot either :( .

Sorry I couldn't do more to help.
