I am told that my oil leak is likely coming from the seal between the power steering pump and the vacuum pump. Not a warranty repair, and here are the options they gave me.

1. New vacuum pump, $1100

2. Tube of silicone and labor $200

At least that second option is there. They cleaned the engine, and put dye in the oil, so they can put a blacklight in there to find out for sure. But I still need to know if anyone knows how to get that seal. Dealer cannot locate it, and would also appreciate the help soon since there is another truck there with the same problem.



Any help is appreciated.
 
I dont know why it wouldnt be a warranty thing, if you still have coverage?

Have you tried a cummins dealer?

Sorry I cant be of more help, I'm not familiar with the seal you need.

I'd get a second opinion. My experience shows that a dealer could make anything a warranty item, and make it NOT a warranty item.

I didnt know oil supplied the vacuum pump?

IF you can't get it fixed under warranty, you can do it your self. First, get a Dodge manual. It has a breakdown of the pump,assy. Once you get it taken appart, you won't believe how simple it is and how much of a rip off the dealer is. The seal can be ordered from any seal supplier. It will be around 15 bucks not including shipping. The seal part numbers are right on the old seal. I'll try to dig up my old paper work and get the number for you.

I'm with Charlie. There is an oil seal at the vacuum pump output shaft that drives the power steering pump. My Cummins parts manual does not list this as seperate seal. My Dodge manual shows the seal in the vacuum pump, and warns to use caution to avoid damaging the oil seal in the vacuum pump during installation. No R&R info on the seal only.



Its probably a common sized oil seal. You may have to pull it and match it up. Or if we knew who was the OEM vendor for our vacuum pumps, you may be able to get it directly from them, or get a size.

There is a seal and a o-ring in the end of the vac. pump. They are both metric. The ones I have are made by " National-Federal Mogul" and are listed by their size. The seal is 28mm x 38mm x7mm and the o-ring is 55mm x 59mm x 2mm. The RTV method is the used car dealer's fix mostly!

If you can not find them, e-mail me. I buy them 20 at a time.
 
Make sure that when you buy the seal it is a vitron(I think that is how it's spelled). This is a heat rated seal the same as what it came with. Also if I had it to do again I would get a thicker seal. The assy. will accept a thicker seal. This would give more seal area on the shaft.

Ok, i did the fix 3 days ago, and im late updating you guys on this one.



As I was told, the leaky seal is not an o-ring, trust me I took it apart myself and its not. I dont know if there are different seals used in different pumps.



However, I installed an o-ring which my dremel tool modified to fit the housing and the shaft snugly.



I also kept the original seal and I WILL find new ones.

Just had a converation on Monday with a Cummins Engineer on o-ring material usage on the air compressors.



nitryl = 250°F

Neoprex = 300°F

Viton = 400°F



FWIW, the accessory vacuum pump is added by Dodge. It is NOT included in the Cummins 100k warranty. We've got the same grey lines with our 8. 3's.
