Heres the situation, installed gauges yesterday,at 50mph level ground egts are at 600,wot 1300 is the highest so far, boost at 50mph on level ground no head wind is 0,at wot boost quickly reaches 26# and holds steady,I was told that 26# is low for the banks ottomind programed for the powerpack and a 38# wastegate, fuel press at idle is 9#,crusing at 50mph 6 to 7#,at wot 1#.

1, could the wastegate be opening premature?

2, if so can I clamp the hose off with vise grips to test it,or is there another way?

3, if the wastegate is opening premature,is it adjustable,or should I use another method of disabling, how to?

4, am I due for a new lift pump? I would bet on it!!

5, if theres anything else to check or test please give advice.

THANKS!

You need a lift pump for sure. Yes you can clamp the boost line to the wastegate actuator and see if it is opening, if you get more than you had it is opening. If it is opening you can adjust the rod to the actuator to make it shorter, and gain a few pounds of boost.

IMO, if you are only seeing 1300* there is no power to be gained by more boost, just lower temps. If your 1300 was towing I would leave well enough alone, empty it is a bit high.

Your situation sounds like a leak though, you should be seeing 3-6 PSI at 50 on level ground. Check all the boost tube connections and the wastegate hose. It could also be leaking in your gauge line if you have a mechanical boost gauge.

Check it over good for leaks and let us know what you find. Hope this helps.

Tragic wagon,

I agree with all others here on your F/P, I get 15 at idle and 12 cruzin at 75 and wot = 5 at the lowest, I replaced mine with the new Cummins version, see my sig for part #'s the price is $142. 00 ... ... ... ... ... Kevin

Thanks for the advice. :)

unfortunatly no improvement:(,double checked hoses and clamps from turbo to intake and connections for the boost gauge, everything seems fine, clamped the wastegate hose and went for a drive, boost is still 0# crusing at 50mph,at wot boost went to 30 for a split second (if I had blinked I would have missed it) then dropped to 25# and held steady, only happend once, couldnt repeat 30# again. It must be capable of 30# boost but something is letting go :(,any more ideas on this, what else could be causing it?I sure would like to get the full potential of what mods I have :D.

PS. as for the lift pump guess Ill call the dealer and setup a appointment .

Well something is wrong for sure, hauled a load of fertalize today and all I could get is 23# of boost, unloaded it and still 23# is all it would do.

Could it be the low pressure of the lift pump or some kind of sensor? what could it be?

ANY ADVICE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

HELLO AM I ALONE HERE

Surely somebody can help with the boost problem.

Chipstien, I talked to the mechanic at the dealer this morning,he said he dosent care what is on the truck as long as I tell him about it so he wont be confussed when he is searching for a problem in the future, and he told me to make sure he is the one that recives the truck when I take it in because a diffrent mechanic might try to void my warranty. I sure am glad to find this mechanic

:D. He is replacing the lift pump thursday ;).

have you tightened all of your intercooler lines? that is the 1st place i would check. the banks stuff is pretty low on power compared to some of the stuff we run, so your boost might be close.

jim

Tragicwagon, man do I envy you. That is the sign of a true friend in the service department. If only I could find one of them in the Puget Sound Area. Oo.

yea unfortunatly the banks is low on power, but I didnt know of all the other boxes on the market when i bought it (banks marketing). but when i clamped the wastegate hose boost spiked to 30# for a split second, but i could never repeat 30 again even with the hose still clamped. If it done it once it should do it again. right?

I have checked all hoses for rub holes, loosend, turned, and retightend all connections, and replaced the wastegate hose.

since it spiked 30# once while the wg hose was clamped off, what is the best way to test the pressure or disable it completly .

CUMINNTSTRKN, what is it like to drive a truck with that much POOWWEERRRRR? Oo. Oo.

Ill probably never know :{

Well I figured out the problem, the first time I clamped the wastegate hose I didnt clamp it tight enough,I didnt want to damage the hose. I clamped it again today and clamped it tight, and the gauge showed 33# Oo. Oo. Now for another question, can I plug the hose completly, will it hurt anything,or is there a better way?

sorry for being such a pest!

Thanks for the advice!

Now for some DD2s:D

There is nothing to gain by having more boost without fuel. There is a balance that you are trying to achieve, and the balance is far more important than macho numbers. If you are getting a max EGT of 1300 you are pretty well balanced, more boost will not make any more power and 1300 is a safe EGT to hold for days on end. You can adjust the wastegate actuator rod to make it shorter and gain some boost that way, but I would not take the EGT lower than about 1200 at sustained WOT. You will find as I have that lower boost makes more power than maxing it out. I have seen 38 PSI and can make it anytime I want, but I am set up for 30 PSI though because it runs better. There are a ton of guys that would benefit from dropping the boost down on here.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that less boost could sometimes be better, I always thought that more is better. I'll try tuning the wastegate rod and see what happens, But at least now I know it's capable of 33lbs.

Boost pressure

I have a 98. 5 with the Banks Powerpack kit on it and at WOT I see 38psi and 0 at idle. I'm not sure of the best way to check it but even new gauges are not as accurate as you may think. It may be a bad gauge or possibly the map sensor? I believe the ootomind gets the pressure signal it sends to the gauge from the MAP sensor. I had some questions during the install of my system and the Banks Tech. line was very helpful, have to tried giving them a call? Good luck! :)

LSMITH,

Thanks again,I adjusted the wg rod using an air compressor and regulator,I now make 33# and the EGTs are at 1250 on a sustained WOT run up hill in 5th gear. I am satisfied with the temps, and boost #s,dont feel that Ill ever have an EGT problem, atleast untill DD2s. :D

CStewart,

Are you useing banks gauges? if so are they mechanical or electric?also what are your EGTs at WOT? and have you ever put it on a dyno to see how much power youve gained? I know Im asking alot of questions, sorry. Not many people on TDR run banks equiptment, and Ive never been around a banks equipt truck to compare results. TIA.

ps. my boost gauge is mechanical so the map sensor shouldnt have any effect.

The EGT and Boost gauges came with the Banks kit and are "electric". The gauges gets it signal from the otto mind box, I believe the pressure signal is coming from the MAP sensor and the EGT signal is from the T/C you install in the exhaust manual. I have never towed trailers as heavy as the truck is rated for just a 21ft procraft bass boat and a four place snowmobile trailer. With these trailers and my foot in it or runnin empty and goin way faster then I should be the temps have never gone over 1200. One of the things I liked about the Banks product is that it monitors the temps and boost pressure to keep from doing damage to your engine or transmission. I haven't put it on a dyno yet but I have no reason to belive it isn't at or real close to banks claims HP and torque wise. There a lots of other systems out there that run great and make more power but this was my first diesel and the total package consept looked good to me. I have 101000 miles on truck, 70000 since I installed the kit, it still runs great. At 94000 miles my injection pump bit the dust and the dealer installed a new injector pump and booster pump even with the banks kit on it.
