I would still lean towards the A/c unit. Had a older Dodge P/U that had a bad seal on the compresser, someone had over filled the A/c system and it would blowbye and smell, look like a oil leak on the left valve cover when used alot. It finally started to squeal. I put a new seal in it and recharged with proper amount of 12 and oil. It would blow cool air and act like it was still working properly, but when we checked the actual temp of the air coming out it wasn't cold enough.
