Hello Boys. I'm new in the Reno area and spent most of the day installing Gages. I need the tap for the pyrometer I think it's a 1/4 npt. I drove all over town from Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears, Auto Zone, Pep Boys and no body had the tap. I'd like to know if someone in the area could help me out and lend me the tap I'd be grateful.

Bill I would be happy to help you out. I live in Carson and I have the 1/8" and 1/4" npt taps.

Great thanks a bunch I'll get over there first thing in the morning I sure hope they have it. My first stop was a Napa store they told me over the phone he had it in stock but when I got there he told me they sold it.

I really appreciate the offer on the help I’m amazed at your response time but I need to get them in before this weekend, It's my better half’s birthday and I made plans to take her camping in our new 5vr.

I can't tell you how much this means to me again thanks a bunch. Your response time was faster than the yellow pages I’m looking in for auto parts.

If you ever need anything drop me a line I'd be more than happy to help you with anything anytime except this weekend :)

Hi RankRam. Was just looking at the photo gallery you have I see you have the same XM radio I had. I'd like to show you my new XM radio install with this kit I found online. It's not cheep but the sound is out of this world. I had my XM in the ash tray like yours but I got tierd of the wires and it falling out of the ash tray on race day and 4 wheeling. One more question did you install the pyro on the 05 in the same place as the 03.

Bill

Bill sorry I can't help you sooner than the weekend.

On the 05 the pyro is installed on the top of the manifold near cylinder #3. This not where I wanted it but I did not have the right drill at the time. I will be changing it to the same location as the 03.

This is the 03 location if anyone is interested in what we are talking about.

It looks like the pyro is off to one side or is it my imagination. Not a problem on the help I can do it if I have the 1/4npt tap and If I do have any problems or I can't get it done on time I'll send you a PM if thats OK.

Bill

It is not your imagination; it is off-center. there is a center piece in the down spout where the pyro is installed, creating a front and rear exit chamber in the down spout. Don't drill the center!

Just trying to be helpful... not a smarty pants.

No please give all the advise you can it's my first time installing a pyro and I could use all the input you have. I'd hate to make a mistake that will cost me a new exhaust manifold on a new truck. It was hard enough telling Miss B why I needed to spend 500 on gages and mounts. :)

Thanks again

Pull you turbo off the exhaust manifold OR grease up your drill bit and clean the shavings off it frequently. Use a shopvac or other suction tool to reach down in the hole and suck out any drill poop. Don't want that stuff going through the turbo.

As an option to AMink's suggestion, you can loosen up the bolts on the turbo so that there is a space between it and the manifold. I cut a piece of cardboard from a cereal box and slipped it in between the turbo and the manifold, to trap the shavings. After drilling and tapping, I blew out the shavings, removed the cardboard and tightened up the bolts. Worked great. If you remove the turbo, you may have to deal with the oil inlet and outlet. I don't know how much of a problem that is but, the cardboard trick works.

If you have never done this job before, be sure not to tap into the manifold too much as the probe will bottom-out in the back of the manifold. I was told to tap in far enough that the probe turns in 3-1/2 turns. That should keep you safe.

I am not a mechanic and have done this proceedure only once, on my '03. Before I did this installation, I read about it here on the TDR, and that is where I got my information. You guys that know which end of a wrench to grab, feel free to correct me if my suggestions are wrong or if you have better ideas. I appreciate your suggestions, very much, and have learned a lot from you.

Hope this helps, a little bit.

Wow thats great I feel a little better knowing I have you guys backing me up. Believe it or not I called Grainger and talked with Marcy she said they didn't have the tap. So I called all over Sparks, Reno, and Carson City and finally found one. So If anyone in the area needs a 1/4 npt tap I have one, I think it's the only one for miles.

Bill

Thanks I'll keep that in mind it's now 12:30 and I'm heading out to the garage to drill and tap will keep ya'll posted as how it turns out.

Bill

Well we have problems already I can't get my drill into the location I wanted so I guess Ill put it by # 3 it's the only place I can get into unless I go buy a right angle drill. But them Miss B would (edit) my (edit) if i did. Is the #3 piston location just as good.

Bill

Bill it's not as good but it's good enough, if that makes sense.

The reason we like to monitor the rear three cylinders is that cylinder six is the hottest one.

I tried my best to get to the rear 3 or below down by the turbo but it's not an option at this point. I've spent 5 hours on this one gage and that doesn't include the running around I did looking for the tap, that was 4 hours a lone, now my patience in wearing thin. I got the hole drilled and taped but it getting real hard to turn the pyrometer base into the hole. I can only get two turns then it gets realllyyy hard after that but it's an adjustable pyro.

Bill

Bill if I understand what you are saying it sounds like you need to run the tap in a little more. Three and a half turns of the pyrometer base is what I do.

You shouldn't need to force it.
