hi- hubby is traveling with the p-up--- 94 dodge diesel... . he's having trouble with intermittant missing for 3-4 seconds. . then normal then missing again. and if he steps on throttle it is stiff-hard to move and delayed in it's action. if he pushes cluthch in it dies but fires right back up... so i'm trying to search this site that he's on for help- but this is easier for me... any ideas... . ?? he's traveling right now- about 6-8 hrs away from home so i'm really not any help to him. thanks. . g

If you click on Site Features, top of this page, in the drop down menu, in red letters will be Travel Companion. Check it out for members near your husband.

For Starters - Drain the Fuel Filter to drop any water he may have gotten in bad diesel.

Change the Filter ASAP.

Sounds like it could be Pump Problems - but I don't know a lot about Pumps... so don't take that to heart.

Cracking in fuel lines is possible - i think one symptom of that is sporadic high idle.

Hope all works out...

My 96' had a severely dry rot fuel preheater to lift pump line. It didn't leak fuel but sucked lots of air. Local dealer was two weeks order time. I bought marine grade Coast Guard approved diesel fuel line. Installed with large loop. Going direct without loop would've caused a fuel shortage. Had to shorten a little to avoid rubbing on the steering shaft. Has your friend checked out the Pump Overflow Valve? This could cause his reported problems. (Search to verify) I remember it was possible to inspect and measure length of spring. The spring fatigues over time. It's possible to manually lengthen the spring. This is a temporary fix until a new one can be sourced. Also, did the problem start after a recent refuel stop? If so, it's time to purge the tank and fuel system.

Ram Diesel Injector Pump Problems

I don't think he has air getting into system if he did the truck would not start easily( He would have to prime it).

Missing: Could be one or more injectors (loosen nut at injector line(s)listen for change in engine sound) or high pressure fuel line leak (check for leaks with thick cardboard).

Throttle: Check connections of throttle linkage.

Engine dying when clutch pushed in: Don't know mite be low idle or throttle linkage.

As stated could be Injectiion pump.

Any smoke coming out of tail pipe? If so what color?
