Another WIF Light Problem

If anyone could help me with the problem I have please do. I have a 1991 W250 with an automatic transmission. I started it up the other day and once I got going down the road I noticed the speedometer didn't work and after driving a few miles it wasn't shifting to o/d either. Also my water in fuel light doesnt work or my light for the manifold heater as well as the heater itself. The low fuel light doesnt work and probably some other things that normally dont light up on the message center. I have replaced the speed sensor on the transfer case and that didnt change anything. I have also checked all the fuses and they are good. Info on the location of fusable links that would have to do with these problems would be helpful. Also I put it on a diagnosis computer and it would not read because the computer said the key switch wasn't on. The truck starts and drives but I guess a certain part of the key switch or the electrical part of the key switch could be bad but I am not for sure. I am running out of ideas guys so if you can help me I would be very thankful. My name is Kyle and my e-mail is -- email address removed --

If it says you don't have the ign on, and it is, find a wiring diagram and check for ign voltage at the ecm. Or just unplug, clean and put dielectric grease in all of the connectors you can find and clean every ground you can find also. That should give you something to do, hell you might find and repair something else while you're poking around.

First thing I would check is that the ignition key is returning to the run position, when the lock cylinder gets old/worn it sticks and wont let the electrical switch spring back fully into the run position.

Good idea, my truck has done that. When it did do it, the brake light and ABS light stayed on and there was no power in the cab.

I'll second or third that.....

I have had my warning lamps remain lit and wonder what the heck is going on here.

Also it may/may not benefit you to clean all the grounds i. e. radiator support and battery cable ends on the engine/battery. Maybe check your pos terminal(s) too if you haven't performed this little bit o maint in some time.

I just replaced the lock cylinder and switch in my truck.

Let me say it is blatenlty obvious when the lock cylinder malfunctions. The whole feel is different.

It is however VERY easy to pull it all apart and inspect it..... as long as it's still working... when it breaks like mine did it can be difficult to get the cylinder out.

On mine the "ring" on the end of the lock cylinder split and started to jam inside the ingition switch... it wouldn't allow it to get to the start position.

I replaced both parts since I had it all apart. It took a few days to get the cylinder "keyed" by a locksmith, but I was able to start/stop it with a screwdriver in the interim.

Good luck.

Jay
