My wife and I are currently two weeks into a 3 and half month trip across Canada and am presently at Woodstock Ontario. The problem that developed today was when we were unhooked from the trailer and touring around and parked the truck for about three hours. When we returned the headlights were on and had come on by themselves. They are the daylight running lights and the highbeam indicator shows on as well and does not cancel when activating the light switch or dimmer switch. I have had to disconnect the batteries while the truck is parked and will have to go to a dealer on Monday. Would appreciate any suggestions as to what is the problem. It has to be either the headlight switch or the ignition switch. Will have to check back on the site tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Disconnect the daytime running light module on the driver side inner fender well. . It has shorted out and is keeping the lights on.

It is a small 3" square box, black in color, and you will likely see some crap oosing out from under it. . If you can`t find it, try removing fuse 7 in your fuse box inside the cab, your reverse lights will not work but it should also turn off your DRL`s. .

Good luck and happy traveling, Garth. . :D

Leon,

Besides what Garth has mentioned you can add the dimmer switch as possible problem, I don't have daytime running lights so Garth is more likley to be right.

Usually High beam indicator will light up if ground to head lights is gone to lunch.

If the dimmer switch goes out I believe it will do something similar maybe when the day time running light module freaks it will turn on high beam indicator.

Leon,

Looking at service manual notice a feature of the multi switch (hi-low beam, turn signal, wiper washer) one I forgot about, passing warning lights.

When you pull turn signal lever slighty forward the high beams come on until released, this feature has power to it all of the time.

Looking at daytime module it has power to all the time also but the ignition and parking brake switch also activated it.

But the manual states in one place that high beams are on at 50 % power and another chapter states it is the low beams on for same function. Of course I'm looking at 96 manual maybe newer manual agree on which light are used Hi or low?

Thanks guys for the help. GMcLean, you were right on the mark with your diagnosis. I pulled the plug and went to the dealer on monday as they had one in stock and we were on the road in short order. I apologize for taking so long to respond but ran into a computor problem that took awhile to figure out and I thank Robin tdr/admin for the help. We are now just about to enter Quebec after spending the last few days touring our capital city Ottawa. Good to get out of the heavy traffic. :) I have to take this opportunity to praise the value of this site and for all the great members who particpate and keep guys like me out of the poor house while travelling:D
