Two days ago while on a hunting trip, I started her up and drove about 5 minutes and all of a sudden the engine went to idle and I had no response from the pedal. It just set there and idled for about 2 minutes, the check engine light came on and then everything returned to normal. Except for the check engine light, after that 2 minutes she ran fine. I drove it back to camp watching all gauges closely, everything normal. Now two days later I start it up and the check engine light is off. I'm thinking throttle posistion sensor???? What do you guys think? Is it fixxin to go all together or was it just a computer blip? Odometer reads 67,000.

Air temp was in the low 30's ( feul gel should not have been an issue)

Turn your key on to the run position (not starting or bumping starter) three times. On the third turn leave the key on and look at the ODO. It will flash some codes (P ****) write them all down and look them up here

Hope this helps and good luck

I Tried.

I have tried numerous times to get the code that way but I can't get it to work. I tried to turn the switch fast, slow, and in between with no results. Since the check engine light is off now is the code still there?

OBD II

I know the "key on" thing works on DC pre- OBD II, but those ones flahsed the check engine light. I think 98 model trucks were first with OBD II and i thought that they would only send codes to a scanner of some kind.

but now i'll have to try it out on mine to see what happens... .

Sorry for the confusion.

Im in an '02 and I was told that it would work for your rig (99)

As far as the code being stored, I think most of them are stored to be retrieved later. Looks like you would have to find someone with an OBD scanner to retrieve the codes so you have a clue as to what went wrong.

Sorry for the mixup

Maybe someone will chime in on how or if your truck has an onboard retriever like my 02 does.

Good luck

I had the exact same thing happen to me at 67,458. What a scary feeling. Anyway, I've pulled the repair invoice and the dealship replaced the throttle position sensor (TPS) and the transfer pump assembly. Covered by the warranty. Whew !

Haven't had a problem since. Hope this helps.

I had something similar happen to the Mack I was driving. It acted like somethimg was moving the throttle back and forth quickly and died a couple of times. The dealers' laptop didn't show a code the first time, but did the second. What it was, was a bad connection on the harness going to the fuel injection punp. It only did it when connector got shook just right, not all of the time.
