my 1999 ,3500 dodge ctd is acting up again . the ctd runs good and then when i go to start it again, the motor starts, but has no throttle responce. this has happened 3 times. the first time i had this problem was i was on the freeway and i had no throttle responce at about 2400 rpm . then applying more throttle peddle ,it then picked up speed then repeated the same thing . the check engine lite came on. so i took it to a dealer and thay replaced the apps(tps) sensor that was at 75,000 miles. things went fine for a while then at 100,000 miles the ctd would start then would not have any throttle responce. i unplugged the batterys for 6 hrs then reset the tps as discribeb in tdr posts that worked fine . . yesterday i turned the pu off and when i restarted it , i had NO THROTTLE RESPONCE AGAIN , i removed the ground wires on both battery again and waited 2 hrs then reset the tps this time the ctd had 106,000 miles on it. a while ago i replaced the fuel pump with a aftermarked mod. relocated it to infront of the fuel tank and has had 12- 13 lbs pressure there after. with 10 lbs at wot. ANY HELP WOULD BE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO ME, I LIVE 45 MILES AWAY FROM TOWN AND IM GETTING TO NOT TRUST THE GREAT CUMMINS. THANKS JIM

I am not familiar with the 24 vales but every thing i have read says that more than likely it is the Injection pump going out.

Yes it could be the VP44. It could also be TPS. Check engine light?. You really need to have it scanned to check for codes first.

on friday, the cummins would start, but had no throttle responce. i disconnected the batterys and waited 30 min. then hooked the batterys up, recal the tps . it started and ran fine no engine check lt. i had it scanned by a shop ,it said that it was a 1689 code, thay could not find any other codes, ON SATURDAY I WENT ON A DRIVE ,ENDED GOING TO AUTOZONE FOR THE FREE SCAN, THE 1689 CODE WAS READ AGAIN BUT THATS ALL THAY COULD READ, LEFT AUTOZONE. STOPED TO FILL UP GOT ON THE FREEWAY AND HEADED HOME ,THE CUMMINS RAN AS SWEET AS EVER NOTHING OUT OF KILTER, FUEL PRESSURE 12 PSI . STOPPED AT A LT AS USUAL, ENGINE DIED AND THEN NO ELECTRIC . EVERY THING WAS DEAD. WAS PULLED TO A SAFE PLACE BY..... A PASSING FORD OWNER ( AND THANKS FOR HELPING ME) DISCONNECTED THE BATTERYS REMOVED THE EDGE EZ WAITED 30 MIN RESTARTED THE CTD . CHECK LT NOW STAYS ON RUNS SWEET AND STRONG. MONDAY IM CALLING EDGE AND RETURNING THE EZ FOR A CHECK UP , I THINK THATS MY PROBLEM AND I ALSO AM GOING TO TAKE TO ANOTHER SERVICE GARAGE FOR ANOTHER SCAN. THE FIRST MECHANIC SAID THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE THE ENGINE CHECK LT ON TO HAVE A BETTER CODE SCAN. WELL SEE HOW THAT GOES. I NEED THIS BABY TO BE AS RELIABLE AS IT CAN GET , I LIVE A LONG WAY OFF THE MAIN RD THANK AGAIN JIM

Anyone have any suggestions about this code?

Here you go... .

P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM and Injection Pump Module Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

just had the dodge into the garage for a scan, and the 1689 code, no com between pcm and ecm, the edge ez that was pluged in during my problems is wired between the ecm and the pcm, when i unpluged the ez and rechecked the code in the system all of my problems are now gone. sent the edge ez back to edge for them to replace the unit. i will hook the replacement (ez) . i hope this time it lasts longer than 6 months

You really need to fill out your profile with things you have added to your truck so that it shows up on your posts. I am sure if your sig. was filled out showing an EZ on your system the first responses would have been to remove it and see if that fixes your problem. Any future problems may be easier to diagnose if your sig. is kept up to date. Just some friendly advice.

Regarding APPS

Hi All,

Has anyone out there replaced this sensor? I was told by the dealer that it was located under the black cover on the drivers side of the engine. I pulled that cover and found the throttle cables and some wires that went behind the plate the cables attach to. I pulled the plate thinking that was probably where the sensor was. There is a sensor there, but it does not look like the one I ordered from Bob Caldwell's web site. The one he sold me is smaller than the one on the truck, and has a three prong connector, whereas the original has a six prong connector. I wish I could take pics, but somone else has my camera right now. The numbers on the original are as follows: 1st line#-56028184 2 line #-8257 RF 3rd line#-C-L7. Also has 0. 558 VDC off to the right. Numbers on the one from Bob's are as follows: 1st line#-3930318 2ndline#-5300. The box has 1-04874412 on it, and 73831B. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks..... Jeff

Apps

Just received an email from Eric of Bob Caldwell, stating that the part ordered was for a 97-98 model, so you're right about that. The info I filled out when I searched for the part was 99 all the way, so I would not have expected to get anything from an earlier model. Eric wrote the following, does this sound right?

BY VIN, YOUR APPLICATION IS A 99 RAM DIESEL. THE TPS FOR YOUR APPLICATION IS SERVICED WITH THE BELL CRANK, P/N 53031576AD, LIST IS 374. 00, ONLINE PRICE WOULD BE 299. 20.

Is this the APPS?

Thanks... . Jeff

The TPS was/is the term for 12 valve versions. When the 24 valve came out it was renamed APPS. That looks like a very good price for a 24 valve APPS. I would still call and make sure everyone is talking about the same animal before ordering it. Although they have your VIN and should be able to match it up.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Is this Bell Crank the same thing as the APPS? Do you know where it is located? I'm just trying to figure out if this is the sensor attached to the plate where the throttle cables are, behind the black box, or is this something else?

Thanks again..... Jeff
