Hi all,

Not having fun. I have a 2001 HD 2500 4x4, HO ISB, NV 5600, 4. 11, Limited Slip. 76k miles.

I have taken it into Swift Dodge in Davis CA 2 times to complain about hard shifting and no shifting from stop into reverse or first gear.

Yesterday, on I-80 W, at Davis, the truck refused to shift at all.

I have extended D. C. coverage for 5/100 and had it towed to Swift. They curtly and rudely informed me that the clutch is not covered under the factory extended warranty.

I can understand "wear" items such as the disk, TO bearing, etc. But as far as what they diagnosed:

A cracked throw-out arm.

I would say that D. C. didn't "hold up their side" of the warranty.

By the way, the truck isn't BOMBed.

Bummer.

Anyone else have this issue?

If so, what is the fix in dealing with bad warranty issues? Right now it is in my local shop here in Sacto. waiting for a new clutch.

Thanks,

Matt Silveira

Please do not take this as being rude, but unless you really do not know how to drive a standard, your clutch release fork should not break. If you are droping the clutch at every stop sign, you might bend it, but I doubt you would crack it. The CTD engine makes a lot of low end torque, but not enough to cause a fracture with out a lot of abuse.

This would meen, chances are the plate of steel that was forged had a microfracture and over time, with shifting gears, the plate fatigued and expanded the crack to cause this failure.

My best advice, if you have had this truck in two times before, hopfully it is doccumented, call D/C and deal with them. They can make your truck be under warranty a lot better than your dealer. This arm can fatigure over time, but this milege seems low.

Other advice, while you have the transmission off the truck, replace the clutch, pilot bearing, release bearing, release fork, pressure plate, and machine the flywheel.

Appreciate the input.

The bigger issue is D. C. s unwillingness to stand behind their extended warranty. Yes, I know the clutch itself isn't covered but the linkage, etc. seems a different matter.

I guess this gives the old phrase: "I'll be my own warranty station" a slightly different meaning.

;)

Oh well, at least I know Imler Diesel will get the job done-- and right!

I agree with RGilbert, unless the extended warranty specifically excludes the clutch release fork I would be all over DC. Contact their regional or district office, point out the fact that the clutch disk is not worn out and the truck is low mileage. As a last resort write directly to the President of DC, you might be surprised at the result.

If they still won't stand behind it, this is a rare situation where I consult an attorney. They really should cover the fork replacement, assuming that it was diagnosed correctly.

Have the work done at the garage you want and then take them to your local small claims court. That way you will get the job done right and DC will pay for the expense.
