Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) HELP! Oil pressure problems.

Here's what's happening.



Today my 'check guages' light came on and my oil pressure guage was reading 0 psi. I noticed that as long as my RPM was >1100 I would get about 25psi. If I let it idle it would drop to 0. I immediately pulled over and checked the oil and it was full. Well, since I was only a mile away from the house I decided to cross my fingers and go home. About an hour and a half later I started it up and everything seemed normal, 50psi @ idle. So I went for a drive to see if the problem was still there. Sure enough, after about 20 minutes of driving the same thing happened. 25psi >1100 RPM, 0psi <1100 RPM. Has anybody heard of this happening? What shoul I do? I have an '01 with 60k on it.

Try replacing the oil pressure sending unit. My 96 did the same thing to me on a trip up Fla. Turnpike. Talk about sick to your stomach. Dealer in ST. Augustine replaced the unit-$108-and all's well.

I think my pressure sender may be bad also. When I first start the truck in cold weather, I notice it takes 5-10 seconds before my pressure gauge shows anything. It immediately jumps to around 80 or so psi. As the truck warms up to operating temps it will fall to around 50 on the highway and 30-40 at idle. Kinda scares me cause the bell will sound at startup because the computer does not see oil pressure at first. Or it could be my heater grid is pulling big amps and the bell is from the low voltage on the voltmeter gauge. I cant tell what is causing the bell to chime. How long after startup should pressure show up? I'm almost positive its not 0 psi for the amount of time the gauge says it is. Maybe its just cold oil flowing slow and causing a slight delay in the sending unit picking up pressure?

Bill- Thanks! I was hoping that is was nothing serious. The fact that increasing RPM raised the pressure is what had me worried. I would have figured that if the sending unit was bad that it would just stay at 0 all the time. I'll give that a try and post my results.



Neil- That's pretty much how my guage was working when everything was OK. Except the chime or 'Check Gauges' light never came on.

I put the part # for an 01 (Early 01) in there and it worked perfectly.
