will this cause any problems?

Well guys I got it all done execpt for the connection to the OEM lift pump wire. I have two wires to choose from. 1 yellow with a black strip and 1 black with a yellow (might be white) strip. Anybody know which one. I guess I could just flip a coin 50/50 chance. Or I guess I could turn the key on and check voltage:rolleyes: Thats kind of a pain:{

The forward pin (when installed) on the Cummins 3990105 transfer pump is "+". Since these install on model year 2000 and newer without any additional harness, the forward wire on the plug on your existing transfer pump should also be "+".

Wire for lift pump power

Looking up this in the Service manual it says that the YL/WT wire is the one for power.

I have a aux pump but it was put in awhile ago so I looked up the color for ya.

Your gonna like your fuel pressure now!!:)

Cliffman,

If you want to make your life a whole simpler, Get the "pigtail" from Cummins. Part # 4025182, $8. 50. This is made for the early 24v trucks that need to replace the lift pump. What it is, is a 10" harness w/ a male on one end and a female on the other . You can solder the relay trigger wire on the bench and then just plug it in between the wire harness and the lift pump. Believe me, It's a lot easier that trying to solder or scotch-lock the existing wire down by the pump.

On my '01 the hot wire is the yellow one; but also on my truck there is NO short pigtail as has been talked about here. I about went crazy trying to find one, till I finally realized it just is not there. The wires for the pump come right out of a large wire bundle. Its an early '01. I took delivery in Feb. of 2000.

Ooops, just occured to me. Is this an ADD on pigtail rather than a replacement?

Done!!!

Thomas, well that's a good thing cuz that's the one I put it on :confused: . Took me 3 hours to install the pump and all the wiring except the wire that goes to the OEM lift pump. Splicing into the lift pump took 2 1/2 hours :mad: D@mn splicer that came with the kit fell apart after I connected to the pump wire :mad: Puten that thing on is like threden a needle in the dark:{ :{ Had to make a run to the local Radio Shack to pick up another splicer. The good news is it done:) and I'm looken at 20 psi at idle and 10 psi at WOT :D :D. Cant here the pusher pump at all. Oh, and one other thing, I've developed a new under arm deodorant, it's called "good ol'e diesel #2 :eek: Puten the bend in the fuel supply line was a bit wet :rolleyes:

merryman,

Yes, it's an add on pigtail.

Cliffman,

Isn't trying to tie into the wire harness pigtail a bear. The add on pigtail makes it a 10 min. job. Plus you can solder the thing for a better connection. I learned this the hard way helping a friend put the scotch lock connector on. Me on top of the engine and him under the truck trying to hook the d*mn thing up. Both of us working one handed. Never again!#@$%!

Pigtail

tmacc, think I'll order that pigtail just for safe keeping. Even though the piece of I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER Radio Shack splicer is working it seems a bit hoekie, even with the zip tie I put on it to keep it from coming apart :eek: . How do I know this pigtail will fit on my particular lift pump connector :confused: .

God, do I feel dumb and frustrated. Don't know why I got that screwed up. Working alone, it must have taken me over an hour to get a scotch lock on that pump wire!

Next time I get near a cummins dealer (its 170 miles away) I will get ht pig tail and re do it.

Vaughn

Cliffman,

I know the pigtail works on '01(mine)and '01. 5(a buddy's) trucks. I'm pretty sure it works on all 24v trucks because it was necessary to install the newer lift pumps on the early 24v. I thought I read somewhere on TDR that the early truck's lift pumps connector was on top of the lift pump instead of the bottom. Hence the need for the longer pigtail. Don't quote on that though.

Picture of lift pump wires

Here is a picture of my install of jumper connection to lift pump relay.

Kinda hung upside down to solder this one. :)

Here is my first shot at new way to post images.

The pigtail (Cummins P/N 4025182 for $7. 48) is essentially an extension cord. One male end, one female end, and about eleven inches of wire in between.

I imagine a Cummins dealer could put one in an envelope with less than a dollar in postage and mail it anyplace in the USA.

Scotch Lock

Piece of crap scotch lock failed after a week of daily use, and at the worst possible time :mad: I was on my way out of town with the better half and the "home away from home" in tow, just got on the freeway and my piece of crap SPA fuel pressure gauge started to fluctuate. I thought the gauge was acting up again for the 3rd time. Well this time the gauge was working correctly and I was F. O. R. D:mad: :mad: . Worst yet I forgot my tools:--) Good thing my buddy Blair was close by and had a peice of 3/8 hose. :) Didn't know what was wrong at the time so we just by-passed the pump and ran on the OEM pump. What a bummer that was:{

Pusher Pump

Schools open, I need to be educated. Can someone explain to me the Pusher Pump Pro's and Con's? Should I be expecting something to go out, is thats why I need to install this? I have already been down the Oil Sending unit and transmission adjustment road. Not that I'm complaining, I would never own anything else. Just trying to avoid some down time or having to give money to the Stealers.

The crappy little pump that sucks the fuel from the tank and feeds the very expensive VP44 injection pump (look bellow the fuel filter and toward the fire wall) on the 24v trucks has a tendancy to die. This means that the VP44 has to suck fuel from the tank and then it dies. All this will happen after your warrnty is up. One of the solutions is to add a pump back by the tank to push fuel to the crappy pump. It keeps it from failing. I moved my stock lift pump to the rear of the truck and I have no problems. The hardest part was when I cut the stock connector off the trucks wiring harness... ... . snip and there was no going back.
