I posted yesterday with a problem with fuel shut off solenoid.

I thought I had the problem licked. No such luck:(

I got a new fuel shut off sol. relay (from dodge no less $48)

put the new part in and she fired right up no problem. I turned it off just to try it again and now she wont run again. Same problem.

The solenoid wont stay in the run position. I also cleaned all the bat conections and fixed a few corroded wires on the bat. Also I put in HD starter contacts about 6 mos. ago.

I got the shut off solenoid out. how do I test this thing with out an ohm meter? I can put power to the start(white) wire and ground and it works good. The red wire I take it is the run coil. Should it also hold the solenoid closed when you apply power?

If you push the plunger up with power to the red wire it should stay up. The white wire is what sucks it up. My feeling is you have a poor/corroded connection that you still haven't found.

thanks for posting

I do have power to the red wire with the key on. I'm useing a test light and have power on the solenoid side of the closest conector. Do you know how to test the solenoid since I already removed it. Also going to need a new boot as this one is rotting.

I've never put an ohm meter to one but imagine if the solenoid is bad it will be open(infinite) good should be pretty low, just guessing 1000 ohm or less.

Rocky Mnts Cummins ( at least in Missoula) has boots for $20 p/n SA4153

"Under 1000 ohms" makes for a large ball park, but is a good guess nonetheless. Just don't be surprised if it's quite a but lower than that, in the vicinity of 200 ohms, or even as low as 20, perhaps. If it's zero, it's shorted and you will have found the problem.

went to cummins and got a new solenoid. 275 smackers.

Looks like another dodge redesign because the one from cummins is about twice the size as the old one, comes with a new bracket and screws and has a heim joint where it hooks to the linkage. Fired right up. problem solved (knocking on wood).

I wonder if bad contacts on the relay made the solenoid fail. Or maybe the bad starter contacts six mos. ago had something to do with it. Check those relays, they're cheeper than the solenoid. Of course I broke the case on the relay trying to get it apart so maybe it should just be a maint. item.

Thanks again for the help!
