I do not recall being able to really hear my OEM lift pump when doing the starter bump thing after changing fuel filters either. I didn't have an FP gauge until 45K miles, and as soon as it was installed, I learned my lift pump was dead... ... no idea how long it had been dead, but the truck had been running perfectly up until that moment.
By the way, I now have a Carter pusher pump. Man, can you hear that thing run when doing a starter bump

can you say LOUD!!!???
I would say, do at least 3 - 4 starter bumps when changing the fuel filter, maybe 5 or even 6 if you completely drain the fuel bowl, just to be extra safe, then start the truck and let it idle for at least a full minute before driving it anywhere.
Early on, I goofed and forgot to bump the starter... . fired the truck up after a fuel filter change, about 10 seconds later, the engine died. Air bound... ... can you say

Now, I always let it idle/run for at least a full minute before I drive anywhere, just in case it does get air bound, I am still sitting in my driveway where I can work on it instead of in the middle of traffic somewhere.
Hope this helps.
