I just bought a phat shaft 62 turbo on ebay, and need to know if I should keep it a 62 or pay extra for a 64 or 66 before it's sent out. . I don't want to waste hp by not going large enough, though I don't want bad surge or temp issues when I occassionally tow. My 05 is an auto, so I'm leaning towards the 62 or 64. .

This isn't my race truck. I just need an HY35 for my 3. 3 cummins Samurai project. . I figured I'd just buy a PS turbo, and use my stock HY35 turbo for the little cummins.

Advice will be appreciated. . Thanks. .

i have heard that the surge is only on 12v, autos with the tight convertors. i love my 66, i have to work really really hard to get it to surge and max temps i see are 1250 @about 100mph. spools fast, much like a 40, and off the line if you roll into it it is much like stock, i dont care what anyone else says. now if you just mash the pedal it is laggier than stock but rolling into the throttle and it spools very nice and then hit s50psi b4 you can blink.

My 05 with the 66 has some surge problems between 1800 and 2000 rpm under load. I'm working with Brady to find a cure for the issue, as many with 04. 5 don't seem to have the problem. I might go to a 64 instead, also getting 0299 codes quite often. My MAP sensor may be reading low, so the jury is out on that issue.

I had to make a decision, so I just went with the 62. I like the sound of saying I have a SPS66, though the 62 was more suitable to my application. If I can make 500 to 550 with the small one, I'll be very happy. Thanks for the replies.

I'm one of those that got the sps 66 from II recently for my 05 6 speed.

I'm sitting on the fence right now as to which one I should have, the 62 or 66.

Brady at II is extremely customer focused and has talked with me numerous times telling me what ever I decide they will assist. I am very pleased with his attention to my turbo needs and recommend them highly to anyone thinking of purchasing a top notch turbo :)

My 66 has thrown a few 0299 low boost codes, to which I keep a OBD reader in my truck now to erase immediately without going through the 40 start cycle agony.

I also have had from time to time a strange shudder (woof woofing) from the turbo when i would roll on it say in 3 or 4th gear starting around 17-1800 rpm to 2000. More prnounced with the edge turned up, so we are thinking it might be edge related as Brady's own personal 04. 5 doesn't exhibit this trait.

Once this thing lights, it pulls really hard, so hard, that I have smoked the stock clutch now, it won't hold in 5th or 6th anymore. But in my application, I'm soft below 1800 rpm now.

So I can either change over to the TST twin program and keep the 66, or have my edge reflashed to the hot juice and step down to the 62, which I understand builds boost extremely quick.

Anyone care to comment? I like the balls out hp this 66 makes, but wonder if for me, the 62 would be all around better.

The woof-woofing you describe is called surging.

The noise you had before your BOV is barking.

I have been hesitant about buying the 66 because with my 3. 73's and 35's 1700-1800 puts me at freeway speeds. I'd be bummed if my truck surged all the time. Supposedly it's more pronounced when towing. The engine does not use all the air the turbo is making, so it flows back through the compressor.

I want this turbo, and definitely a BOV. I guess I'll just have to try it to see if it surges. How about turning your fueling up? Will that make it go away?

You have a pm.

On edit: I may go with a 64. Best of both worlds maybe? But it sure doesn't sound as cool as 66!

Mine doesn't surge at light throttle at all, in fact, its really smooth. The only surge I get is under load, as in rolling on the throttle, and more fuel on the edge seems to make it worse. On 0 or 1, there is very little surging (some but very little).

I haven't towed with it yet, so I can't say. The BOV in my opinion is a must with a big turbo like this, I am very happy with the BOV that BD makes. Even if the turbo isn't hurt with the barking, I like the comfort it gives me, plus the sound is pretty cool.

Some have question on the Test vehicle towing.

Truck & Trailer Empty full up on fuel Auxiliary included.

15. 000

I tow 24. 000 to 32. 000 Gross all summer long, I have scale tickets showing this on a weekly regular basis.

I have never had a better pulling truck EVER. The mileage is great, the durability has not suffered,it is operator friendly,The cost is fair, the only test left is longevity.

This is Scott not John but I am at work so I am posting under Floor It.

I have an 05 6spd with a standard TST, Ramifier, OFE clutch, exhaust, AFE, ATS manifold, and a PS 62 with a 14cm housing. This truck is our tow rig and man does it tow, this PS 62 is great, spools quick, helped EGTs a ton. It depends what you are looking to do with your truck but for a truck that also tows this is the charger for you.

Last Thursday I made 474. 6 HP 972 tq, this was with the TST on 7/6 and the Ramifier half way up.

who was selling them on ebay?

ID, johnsmith04shop: Industrial is allowing him to sell on EBAY, I Don"t think it will last much longer. I don"t like the way some peddle on EBAY ( Not everyone). When I mention it at the time I wanted to Offer their Product, I was under the impression He only had a few to sell.

ok heres a question for you guys, if i buy this sps 62 turbo can i build my set of twins around it using someone elses turbo upgrade kit with a larger turbo??

I've been very happy with the turbo when unloaded. It's a bit laggy off the bottom, but the power hit is very strong when it does hit. It does bark when the TC locks up, but other than that, it's fine.

However, I just took my first long trip towing 8k. I had VICIOUS surge between about 1600-2000 so I just had to drive 80 mph to get around it :-laf If I towed more (like more than 10%) I would probably do something different, but for my driving, i've been happy.

I may stop by II and have them drive it to see if there's something they can do. Changing the TST settings doesn't affect the surge, it only allows me to get through the surge rpm faster.

I know what "barking" is, I have it. But what is surging? Is it a hit of power that comes and goes at a certain RPM?

I sent you a PM on the surge, please keep us informed if you go to II. I was going to go there in early december myself, as I have the surge problem as well. Maybe time to drop down to a 62-14, as I'd like to tow without having to go 80 mph to avoid it.

And I understand, the 62 doesn't bark, so I guess now I don't need this $500 BOV now. . :{

In my case, at partial throttle, while going through the gears, I get a strong woof-woof-woof pulsing from the turbo which shakes the truck.

I have eliminated the barking between shifts with a BD blow off valve which goes 'phist' between hard shifts from the 6 speed. Not sure how to get around the surging except going to a 62. .

I would describe it more as a cavitation... my boost gauge jumps from like 5 psi to 35 psi 4 or 5 times a second giving the "woof-woof" sound and the truck does shake and power drops. I don't understand the mechanics, but it has something to do with the efficiency curve of the turbo (or something like that).

It's not a pretty sight and that's why people are concerned with it.
