Help Removing Glue

Need Help, I removed the black molding protectors to install chrome protectors on my doors but can not get the old glue off and I am afraid of damaging the paint if I use the wrong solvent, any ideas?

Heat gun would soften the glue. Just don't hold it too close, or in one spot for too long. Don't want to burn the paint. Put it on low and you should be fine. You want to move the gun away and feel the paint with your hand, to check the temp of the surface. It doesn't really take much heat. Works for me.

Have you tried Alcohol or Mineral Spirits. They should remove the glue without damaging the finish on your paint. I use it to remove cement from plastic.

Removing Glue

Try a Citris based cleaner(the stuff that smells like oranges). It works on most glues slowly and will not harm the paint. I'm a retired 3M glue guy and thats what our Tech Service people always advise... ..... Or try a tar remover, sometimes it will work also. The above in combination with sl heat will work even better... .

I just did the exact thing to my truck last week. I used charcoal lighter fluid, squirting it to the top edge of the side moldings and letting it sit for approx. 5 minutes and then using a plastic putty knife, I eased the molding loose on the top half and applied the lighter fluid to the inside of the molding which loosened the bottom of the moldings. Let it sit for approx 5 minutes and peeled it off. I cleaned up quite easily with a rag and more fluid. Washed the truck and made sure it was completely dry and applied my new chrome moldings. Took about a half hour total.

Go to Home Depot or Publix and get some Goo Gone, it is orange and comes in a spray bottle, just spray on the area with glue wait a minute or two and then start to wipe away with a cloth, it will not harm your paint.



You may also want to buy another one called goo and gunk remover, it comes in a small clear plastic battle with a black plastic scrapper attached to the top of the bottle.



I use both and have been working on removing some 6 year old decals on a 24 foot trailer, both work very well.

I've got a can of that 3M citrus cleaner at work. Title name is Adhesive Remover. Works great. Will get the 3M part # tommorrow and post it. Jim.

I had to do this when I first got mine. I had chrome that over powered the black paint and put on black trim. Here is what you do. Get some 30lb fishing line. cut a secton about 3 feet long. Put on gloves and wrap around the line around each hand. Put the line behind the molding and slowly pull the line through the adhesive in a back and forth motion. It will leave some adhesive on the truck. You can buy an adhesive removal disk that will mount on a drill and wiz it off. Another way that is safe but requires alot of time is this. Take a buffing wheel and soak it in WD-40. It will buff off safely without damaging the paint but is very time consuming. Hope this helps.

I have used WD-40 to remove sticky stuff from paint with no ill-effects. Dishwashing soap works well for the glue on bumper stickers, etc.

Use the right tool for the job - 3m adhesive remover. Goo gone is good for removing leftover adhesive from stickers and such, but not the stronger stuff. 3m makes their adhesive remover in regular and citrus based. The regular is much stronger, but the citrus smells a bit better. Get some 3m - they have it at most auto parts stores. Spray it on and wait a minute or two for the glue to dissolve and then wipe.
