Twest - that sounds like a great idea! Whats the procedure?

The sensor reading as seem as they should be, with the exception of the rail psi being high. I have a new observation as of this morning - 1500 rpm, 20% throtle, 25mph - 20k rail pressure. Sound high to me. Running ok though.

My rail pressure is only fluctuating 500 to 1000 psi at cruise rpm could this be causing this running condition? or is it the fact that the rail pressure is just too high (22K) for my injectors?

The rail pressure sensor are not very accurate reading fluctuations like that. The 500-1000 could in reality be 2000-4000 psi variations in pressure. I would guess that kind of fluctuation at those pressures is going to cause a surge.

The 22k is too high for constant pressures if it is actually that. The injectors are rated to 29k but MTBF seems to drop drastically once it goes that high contantly. If the injectors are good and you have enough filtration it should not hurt them but is definitely stressing the components.

Since you changed the FCA with no effect I would think the rail sensor is the next possibility. What scanner\gauge are you reading pressure with? Maybe verify the readings with a dealer tool as they seem to be the only accurate ones. Need to look at demanded rail pressure opposed to actual and see if there are differences and what could account for the discrepency.

I am reading the rail pressure with a cheapo scanner, cant remember the brand, but it is the same one that is branded sears craftsman - costing approximately 250-300 bucks. The dealer scanner can tell you demanded pressure vs. actual? I have an acquaintance who is the service manager at a dodge dealer in croton ny. I'll see if i can use theirs. What would i be actually asking to use?

Yes, the dealer remote can even monitor parameters as you drive to see whats going on. The newest tool is their StarScan, not sure if it works on all the earlier models as that was introduced with the 06's and the CAN Bus interface. The older tool was a DRBIII I believe. Either way, tell them you need to monitor rail pressure demanaded and actual to see if there is anything wrong with it. The deaker tools may be able to dig deeper for codes that won't show on the cheap scanners also. Some of the generic codes that cause a CEL will have other DTC's stored to point to the specific problem.

The dealers kinda have ya there unless you know somebody that has invested in the expensive, read taht $30k, scanner tools that are available to dig to the root of some of these problems.
