and i'm just getting started. got the barring tool and the 6"-# wrench. but i can't find the timing pin... it was there when cummins timed the pump 25k mi ago.

is it situated along the axis of the truck/engine or does it sit sideways to the block. i'm feeling behind the timing cover under the pump and i don't feel any pins.

thanks. scott.

Scott, lay on a creeper head under the truck first on the drivers side behind the pump, look between the power sterring pump and the block so it will drip on you:p and you should see the pin... . takes a light. If you use the pin you better than me, I ran my valves like a gasser would by rolling the motor over with the alternator nut, all that pin does is **** me off!

well, i can't even get the big pulley at the bottom of the engine to move. i can see the mark in the pulley where cummins marked tdc. i use the barring tool and hear it ratcheting but the pulley is not moving. i use the 22mm on the alternator bolt and it slips. so i kind of hold the belt against the alternator pulley and it turns but again the big pulley at the bottom does not move. what am i doing wrong? thanks. scott.

If the crank dampener is not turning the engine is not turning. The barring tool may not be inserted right, make sure it is engaged with the teeth on the flexplate. If you have a mark on the dampener use the starter to turn it. It is a PITA to get the TDC mark just right but it works. If you try the alternator pulley you have very little mechanical force to rotate the engine, you can only turn it very slowly or the compression will keep you from turning it.

ok. pin has been found. damper is moving. now to find tdc. i see all of the methods. but i'm an idiot and would like to have the pin find its hole. this is frustrating. i'm using the alternator method and pressing in on the pin with my right hand. when #1 springs are up. i check #1 exhaust. can barely get . 02 under it. and can't get . 01 under intake. i'm afraid i'm not at tdc. any hints would be helpful. i read where #5 intake is at the bottom of its stroke, i'm close. is this right? thanks.

scott.

Find TDC with the pin the first time, lay on your back, and put a paint, chalk or punch mark on the flywheel at the 6:eek:'clock position. Adjust the correct six valves while in this position. Then, laying on your back again, get a good grip on the fly wheel, rotate it by hand 360 degres, and adjust the other six.

well with the help of RAMMIN ON... . i found TDC... .

if anyone wants to find it easy with the pin... . pull the pin out with needle nose pliers then take off the o-ring, then slide it back in and it slides right in... easy.

THANKS KEITH!!!
