I think my transmission is dying. I was driving home today and I clicked the overdrive on as I was entering the highway. I was moving along and I noticed that it kept going from overdrive to drive, back to overdrive, ect... Every 1 second it would switch between gears. This is with light to moderate pedal pressure. When I step on it, it will down shift and there will be no problems until it gets to overdrive, and then it does it again. When you let off the pedal, it will stay in overdrive. But as soon as you even touch the pedal, it starts shifting. No problems(as of yet) with overdrive off. I was going between 50-70 MPH. This truck was used for towing prior to me purchasing it, and I often take it off road. I did notice the other day while 4 wheeling that the transmission temp got up to about 205. Other than that, nothing wierd. Any ideas whats going on? Thanks in advance for the help. You all rock!

Just an update, after further driving, it is now doing this "gear searching" with the over drive off as well. So between 3rd and 4th as well as 4th and OD. Its getting worse. I think its dying...

maybe there is hope

To help establish what is going on, either find a trans shop or dealer in your area that has a signal monitor(a set of L. E. D. 's with wire piercing clips on the leads) to connect to the OD and TCC ground signal wires at the trans. The trans receives a constant 12v and the pcm provides grounds to the solenoids to activate. Drive the truck and see if either of the lights are cycling along with the problem. If so, the problem could well be the TPS has bad contacts and needs replacing. The L. E. D. 's allow you to see if the trans if acting as being commanded. If the lights stay on during the cycling then the problem may be internal. You might call Bill at DTT and see if he knows of a shop in your area he could recommend. Good Luck.

What you are describing sounds like the TC locking and unlocking. Same thing happened to me and Bill Kondolay suggested it was the TC acting up. There is a TSB out there that will correct the problem.

Had the same prob. on my 92. Turned out to be the throttle positioning sensor. You can buy the part at the dealer and install it yourself if you have the shop manual. Very easy to install, and it will save you about 150 labor. Takes about 10 min.

We have similar trucks and it indeed sounds like the torque converter is unlocking. Click here for the thread I posted a few months ago.
