Hey Guys,

Well, as always, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

On Thursday I was asked to bring my truck to a service center (transmission shop). They have done a bunch of work for me in the past and I am friends with the owner. He was thinking about purchasing a diesel injector cleanining system and had the rep there to test it out. He asked if I wanted the system cleaned for free. All I had to do was tell him if I noticed any MPG increase and an increase in power. Sounded like a good deal, so I dropped by to help him out.

Well, this the procedure the rep did to the truck. He disconnected the two quick disconnects from the pump (about 2 feet back, an inlet and return line). Then he hooked in a 32oz bottle of his "cleaning agent" into the loop. He then had me start the truck. He said we needed to let it run for about 25-30 minutes until all the solution was gone (at 1100 rpm).

When we went to start the truck, there must have been air in the system because it didn't want to run very smooth. He then added air pressure to the bottle to force the solution in (it didn't seem like the pump wanted to pull the solutiion). We ran the truck for 30 minutes and the solution was gone. He disconnected everything and got it back to normal and told me to take it for a spin and see if I felt anything. It seemed to make the truck more responsive.

I went back and talked with the tech and the owner for a bit (45 mins) and when I came back out, started the truck, it idled VERY poorly. It was bouncing from 625-880 rpm. He told me there might be a bit of air left in the system and to drive it home (45 miles) and let him know if it got better.

I got up the next day and the truck would not start. It just puffed white smoke (this has NEVER happened before). Then I plugged it in for a few hours (it was 35 deg out, but the truck was in the garage) and it did fire up, but blew an assload of white smoke. Again it idled like crap, I put 45-50 miles on it to see if it would stop, but no luck. It runs great, but will not idle worth a crap.

Anybody have a clue what happen? The owner said he will take care of whatever it is. I just need to find out what "it" is.

Thanks for help in advance.

I would try to reset the throttle position sensor first. You may of applied the pedal before it started which I think may through it off. Disconnect batteries, let system drain down a while, reconnect batteries turn key to on position without trying to start push accel pedal to floor and release turn key to off position. Now try to start it!

Tried the battery

PSAJB1,

I did take the cables off for about 1 1/2 hours, then tried to restart. Still wanted to start hard and blow a good amount of white smoke. When it did start running, it idled really poorly. I will try again tonight to make sure I didn't touch the throtle.

Is there a danger in him adding pressure prior to the pump? I figured the in tank fuel pumps on the new trucks did the same thing, and a FASS would do the same.

Thanks for the help.

pump

Prairie Dog,

I am not sure where the quick disconnects were. I think they were prefilter. They were under the truck, near the firewall.

Does anybody know if the connectors are prefilter?

If they were under the truck then they were pre-filter. If they were in the engine compartment on the driver side towards the front of the engine bay, then that would be post-filter. Lets hope his insertion point was under the truck!

Where He Was

CStraface,

He did connect both of the lines from under the truck (standing under the driver seat). I guess I will run over right now and get a new filter. Maybe his "solution" has some crap in it that the filter didn't like.

I would go with that as your first move. Sounds like it could be the problem. Let us know what happens once you get a new fuel filter in there.

New Filter

I changed the filter out last night, drained the holder, disconnected the batteries for an hour.

Still have a crappy idle. It is bouncing from 630 to 850. Looks like she is off to the dealer.

I would say the cleaner works pretty good. Got whatever was in there loose enough to plug/stick/fail the injector.

My 06 did the same thing after I got a bad load of fuel. I ran it on a mix of Sea Foam and fuel for about 20 minutes and it ended up passing enough of the junk that it took a pump, rail, connector tubes, and six injectors. Blew a fast $5000 through the system!
